It's already Separation Saturday in college football - 247Sports

Do you know what to expect from Virginia Tech this week? No one does. The Hokies opened the season with 23 players missing due to COVID-19 protocols and other issues and then last week they played without 21 players and defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton watched the game from home for the second straight week due to the pandemic.

And yet the Hokies are undefeated and playing well with a backup quarterback, backups at both cornerback spots and free safety, and running back Khalil Herbert (more than 300 yards last week in a win against Duke) proving to be one of the better all-around players in the ACC.

Will backup Braxton Burmeister continue to play at quarterback or will the preseason's presumed starter, Hendon Hooker, start at No. 8 North Carolina? Tech coach Justin Fuente says he doesn't know but Hooker is cleared to play this week at Carolina.

"It is a testament to people in our program that many people don’t know their names, they don’t get any praise or accolades, but they do understand that our mission is the help these young people be the best they can be, in all areas of their lives, and sometimes, you have to reach outside your comfort zone to try and give them those opportunities," Fuente said. "We’ve got a whole army of people here at Virginia Tech that are willing to do that. I am pleased. I think if the games had been 10 or 14 points different and we hadn’t been on the right side of the ledger, I think I would still feel the same way about, not just our team, but our support staff that basically encompasses everybody, have gone about trying to help these kids.”

Tech's offense is averaging 41.5 points per game, but the defense ranks eighth in the conference (27.5).

North Carolina has remained steady, even though the Tar Heels had to intercept a two-point conversion try by Boston College to seal a win last week. The Tar Heels' offense has actually been something of a disappointment through two games, but the defense has stepped up, ranking third in the conference. North Carolina ranks 10th in scoring offense in the conference (28.5 points per game) and Air Raid quarterback Sam Howell ranks fifth in the conference at 260 yards passing per game and has thrown as many interceptions as touchdowns (three).

Virginia Tech could knock off an ACC Championship Game contender and put itself in the conversation Saturday with a win in Chapel Hill.
