Amidst reports college football will be canceled this upcoming season, one of the sport’s most visible athletes is speaking up.
Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence took to Twitter on Sunday with a passionate plea for teams to take the field this season.
“People are at just as much, if not more risk, if we don’t play,” Lawrence tweeted. “Players will all be sent home to their own communities where social distancing is highly unlikely and medical care and expenses will be placed on the families if they were to contract COVID-19.
“Not to mention the players coming from situations that are not good for them/ their future and having to go back to that."
The series of tweets come on a day when many outlets, citing sources, the entire season is now in jeopardy.
According to SI’s Pat Forde and Ross Dellenger, there will be meetings among the Power 5 conferences this week and will likely result in postponing fall sports until 2021.
“It’s gotten to a critical stage,” one conference commissioner told SI after an emergency meeting. “I think all of us will be meeting with our boards in the coming days. We have work to do that is no fun.”
Still, like Lawrence, many football players took to Twitter on Sunday with the hashtag #WeWantToPlay, showing their support for a season.
“Football is a safe haven for so many people,” Lawrence tweeted. “We are more likely to get the virus in everyday life than playing football. Having a season also incentivizes ...
“Players being safe and taking all of the right precautions to try to avoid contracting COVID because the season/ teammates safety is on the line. Without the season, as we’ve seen already, people will not social distance or wear masks and take the proper precautions.”
According to ESPN, the Big Ten is moving forward with canceling the season and is gauging the rest of the Power 5 conferences. Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio similarly reported Sunday that the Big Ten informed the SEC of its decision and is looking for the conferences to make a uniform decision announcement.
Still, it is hard to fathom how the SEC, which released a revised schedule on Friday, would reverse course less than 48 hours later.
On Saturday, the Mid-American Conference canceled football this fall and the narrative quickly turned to speculation that Power 5 conferences may punt to the spring as well.
