Gardner-Webb Football Adds Speed, Talent With Summer Additions To Roster - Gardner Webb University Bulldogs

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb added a talented quartet to its 2020 football roster as students started classes on campus Wednesday morning.

Head coach Tre Lamb and his staff signed linebacker linebacker Ty French (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt County HS) and receiver Darius Hough (Myrtle Beach, S.C. / Myrtle Beach HS) in June and welcomed running back Jaheim Brown-Taylor (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler HS) and receiver Thomas Pack (Sarasota, Fla. / Sarasota HS) to the roster in August.

French was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com and Rivals.com following a strong career for state powerhouse Colquitt County High in Georgia. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker and pass rusher was named Class 7A All-State following a senior season that saw him post 116 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and three sacks.

As a junior he posted 45 tackles and 12 tackles for loss for a Packers' team that finished 14-1 and ranked No. 14 in the nation by season's end. French garnered FBS offers from South Alabama and UAB, among others.

Hough played just one season of high school football at Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High, playing a key role in one of the nation's most prolific aerial attacks. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound standout helped the Seahawks to a 13-1 record and state runner up finish in 2019, catching 40 passes for 705 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Also a basketball standout, Hough earned All-Region and All-Zone Team honors following the season. He garnered heavy FBS interest as well, garnering attention from Middle Tennessee State, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, Louisville and South Carolina late in the process.

Taylor plans to participate in two sports in Boiling Springs, hitting the field with the football team in the fall and bringing his record-breaking speed to the Gardner-Webb Track & Field team in the offseason.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound speedster is another three-star recruit by 247Sports.com and was rated as the No. 3 running back prospect in Arizona in the Class of 2020. He helped his football squad to a 13-0 record and a No. 10 national ranking as a senior.

On the track, Brown-Taylor won the 2018 Arizona Division I state championship in the 100m and 200m dash, clocking a blazing fast time of 10.43 seconds during his career in the 100 and a time of 21.25 seconds in the 200. By comparison, Gardner-Webb's current school record in the 100m dash in 10.56 seconds – set by Kevin Prime 17 years ago. The school mark in the 200m dash in 21.23 seconds, also set 17 years ago.

Brown-Taylor's most productive season on the gridiron came as a junior, when he ran for 755 yards and nine touchdowns for a team that finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation.

He averaged 7.9 yards per carry for his career and garnered football scholarship offers from San Diego State, New Mexico State, Wyoming and UNLV. He entertained track opportunities at Wisconsin and Texas A&M, among others.

Pack, a 5-foot-11, 170-pounder, was also rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com in the Class of 2020. He hauled in 41 catches for 408 yards and three touchdowns, along with a trio of two-point conversions as a senior.

His best game came against Bradenton Manatee, when he hauled in six passes for 108 yards and a 46-yard touchdown. Over two seasons with the Sailors, Pack caught 75 balls for 758 yards and seven scores.

Pack also garnered a scholarship offer from FCS program Albany, as well as FBS programs Arkansas and Southern Miss early in the recruiting process.

Gardner-Webb's current football roster was energized with the injection of 48 newcomers for the fall 2020 semester – its largest first-year class, including graduate transfers, since the move to Division I in 2000.

Lamb and his staff secured a program-record eight prospects rated as three-stars by at least one of the major online recruiting outlets.
