Crestwood's White signs with Allen University for football and track - Sumter Item

Montrell White's spring did not go as planned. The Crestwood High School star athlete was aiming for a state title in the long jump when the year began, but was quickly forced to the sidelines with every other athlete in the country when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

White wasn't willing to let that be the end of his athletic career, and now he's found the destination, signing to compete in both football and track and field at Allen University in Columbia.

"It just feels good to sign with Allen University," said White. "It's a dream come true to play college football. I always wanted to play college football."

White wanted to find a school where he could perform in both football and track and field, while not sacrificing on his education. He found Allen was the perfect school for him.

"When I went on a visit to Allen University, I felt love there. (Head footballl) Coach (Terry) Keaton, (track and field head) Coach (Jackie) Robinson, (assistant football) coach (Tommy) Brown all showed love," said White. "It's a nice school, it's close to home. My family wanted me to go somewhere close to home, so Allen was the perfect fit."

Crestwood struggled on the football field this season, but White found the end zone twice and was third on the team in total yards.

"I'm very proud of Montrell White," said Crestwood football head coach Roosevelt Nelson. "He's been in the program for four years and done everything we've asked him to do. He's a tremendous individual, a hard worker, a great role model, a good leader.

"We struggled a little bit last year at the quarterback position, so it made it tough for us to get the ball to him like we really wanted to, but he did the best with his opportunity. He's a great athlete in football and in track. I'm really proud of how everything worked out."

White didn't have the chance to take part in most of his senior track season due to the pandemic, but he was poised to make a serious run at a state title in the long jump. White won the event in Region IV-4A in 2019, finishing fifth at state and was among the top ranked in the event in 2020 before the cancelation of the spring season. He said missing out on this spring helped push him to find the right place to continue his athletic career.

"It definitely motivated me to get better," said White. "You can't take anything for granted. I lost my senior year of track, but now I have a chance to ball out at Allen."

Crestwood track head coach Ronnie Choice knows White will be able to make a splash at Allen University.

"I have seen the heart and dedication that Montrell has put into being a 3-sport athlete," said Choice. "His dedication to track and field showed by spending time in the weight room, doing additional jumps to stay fundamentally sound, extra block work to build up his speed, finishing off practices with additional sprints. Montrell White will be a great addition to the Allen University track and field and football teams."

White is excited to see what Allen University has in store for him, but he's most looking forward to seeing a new level of competition.

"Just more competition and getting better every day," said White.
