Cornell commit has football offer revoked after being caught on camera using racial slur - USA TODAY

Cornell football recruit Nate Panza had his offer to play for the Big Red revoked after he was caught on camera using a racial slur that spread over social media. On Monday, it was reported Panza will no longer attend the university.

Cornell director of athletics Andy Noel said in a statement after the incident June 28: "Cornell football was made aware of the video. After viewing it, head football coach, David Archer, made the decision to rescind the individual’s offer to join the team in the fall. There is no room for this behavior in Cornell Athletics."

According to the Cornell Daily Sun, Panza will also no longer attend Cornell. The Cornell media relations department declined comment when contacted by USA TODAY Sports. Panza did not respond to comment when contacted by The Daily Record

In a Snapchat video posted last month, Panza was caught using a racial slur. He was heard mentioning George Floyd, the Black man who was killed at the hands of Minneapolis police officers May 25.

In a similar incident, Marquette rescinded its offer of admission to a lacrosse player over Snapchat post on George Floyd's death. The student compared Floyd's death to the peaceful protest of kneeling during the national anthem.

Kansas State football players have protested racism at the school in response to a student's racially insensitive tweet. Several Wildcats players wrote a letter demanding the university to action against racism on campus. KSU President Richard B. Myers announced measures last week to combat racism, though he said the school could not legally expel the student for the insensitive tweet related to George Floyd.

Two days after Panza’s removal from the Cornell football team, the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell tweeted that it was looking into Panza’s admission to the school. Over 450 signatures were gathered on an online petition calling for his expulsion. The petition said expelling Panza would be a "simple yet elegant opportunity" to reduce the school's limited space to manage a potential surge in COVID-19 cases.

The university’s admissions revocation policy states that it “reserves the right to revoke an offer of admission under certain circumstances, and at any time.”
