Are we going to have football this year? - Wakeweekly

With the COVID-19 pandemic, things are not looking good in the sports world.

Sure, the NBA is scheduled to resume its season July 30 after going on a four-month hiatus, but does that mean other sports will come back, too?

The NFL announced the Hall of Fame Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys is canceled. That’s the first preseason game of the year and it was supposed to be played Aug. 8.

Then later on, the NFL went ahead and canceled the first two weeks of the preseason, cutting the preseason in half by getting rid of 33 games.

That’s how the NFL preseason should be. There should be one game for the regular starters to shake off their rust, then another game to give the reserve players a shot to make the team.

However, the cancellation of two weeks of preseason games, plus the Hall of Fame Game, should raise some concern for avid football fans. Those games were meant to be played in August, which is when college football and high school football kick off.

July is usually the time teams come together for practice to get in shape for the upcoming season. It’s difficult to practice as a team when you’re not allowed to be within 6 feet of each other.

Football is the ultimate team sport. You literally can’t move the ball an inch forward on the field without one other person helping a teammate in some way, whether it’s blocking in the run game or catching a ball in the passing game. How can you get ready for the upcoming season if you’re not allowed to practice a month before games are supposed to start?

Football is my favorite sport. To me, it’s the most exciting and exhilarating type of competition to watch. I just can’t imagine being without football for a whole year. Are we heading in that direction because of the coronavirus?

High school sports are supposed to resume the week of Aug. 17, with the first football game kicking off Aug. 21. Teams have yet to practice together on the same field due to health and safety restrictions. That means players will look rusty on Game 1 of the season with less preparation time than normal.

I hope football doesn’t get canceled. At least have empty stadiums and give fans unlimited free access to watch the games online no matter where they are in the world. I want to be able to watch my Washington Redskins play from the comfort of my home here in Wake Forest.

Let’s pray that the coronavirus situation will be handled in time for the start of the football season. I would hate to miss out on my favorite sport due to this pandemic. Let’s also pray that everyone remains safe and healthy from this disease, so that we can all go back to the way things were before.

Do you think football will start on time this year? Do you think we’ll have a football season? Send me your thoughts.
