Another year, another offseason of sky-high expectations for Georgia in 2020. The bar has been set at College Football Playoff or bust by the fanbase and the way-too-early top 5 rankings reflect that the media shares the same view of the Dawgs. This week, College Football News released its spring version of win total projections for all 130 teams.
For Georgia, the number was set at 10, meaning the Dawgs would lose a pair of games during the season. That is a drop from 2019 when the outlet projected Georgia to win 10.5 and it ultimately went 11-1 for the third-straight season. It listed the Oct. 31 matchup against Florida in Jacksonville (Fla.), the Oct. 10 home game against Auburn, and the Sept. 19 road game against Alabama as the three key games, which is the consensus when breaking down Georgia's 2020 slate.
CFN projects Alabama to go 11-1 and projects both Florida and LSU to go 10-2 as well. That means that Georgia vs Florida, once again, would likely determine the SEC East division champion and, if Georgia has two losses during the season, it would most likely need to win the SEC Championship as well to return to the playoff.
Georgia has had plenty of turnover this offseason. Quarterback Jake Fromm, running backs D'Andre Swift and Brian Herrien, offensive linemen Andrew Thomas, Isaiah Wilson, and Solomon Kindley, as well as safety J.R. Reed, are all off to the NFL Draft. Todd Monken has replaced James Coley as the Dawgs' offensive coordinator. Matt Luke has replaced Sam Pittman at offensive line coach. Scott Cochran has replaced Scott Fountain as special teams coach. There have also been departures in the support staff and strength and conditioning staff as well.
Georgia also has another No. 1 recruiting class coming in, along with offseason graduate transfers from quarterback Jamie Newman and tight end Tre' McKitty from Wake Forest and Florida State, with Newman already enrolled and McKitty set to join the team this summer.
The Bulldogs will begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 17 and G-Day will come a little over a month later on April 18. UGA will hit the practice field three times a week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The first couple of Saturdays will be normal practices but the last three, including G-Day, will have a heavy scrimmage format. Georgia is set to begin its season in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Virginia in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff on Monday, Sept. 7.
