With no March Madness this season, ESPN has turned to imagining what a 64-team, single elimination college football playoff would look like. Currently, the College Football Playoff is limited to the top four teams in the country, with at least one team feeling like they are snubbed. Every year, the calls for the College Football Playoff to expand grow louder. ESPN imagines the ultimate expansion — 64 teams, just like the NCAA basketball tournament.
ESPN used its 2020 preseason Football Power Index to seed the teams, with Utah (No. 24 in the preseason FPI) drawing a 6-seed and BYU (No. 62 in the preseason FPI) drawing a 16-seed.
In the first round of the east region, No. 6 Utah takes on No. 11 Baylor, with ESPN projection a 24-22 upset loss to the Bears.
“A year ago, Dave Aranda was helping to steer LSU to a national championship as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator. Now, he’s got Baylor in the second round of the NCAA tournament in his first season as the Bears’ head coach,” ESPN writes.
In the west region first round, No. 16 BYU draws the misfortune of facing No. 1Alabama, with ESPN projecting a 45-7 loss.
“The Crimson Tide go old school in their first-round game and limit the Cougars to fewer than 150 total yards. Having Dylan Moses back in the middle at linebacker makes a huge difference for that Alabama defense,” ESPN writes.
In the second round No. 1 Alabama beats No. 8 Washington, No. 2 Penn State beats No. 10 Northwestern, No. 3 Notre Dame beats No. 11 Arizona State and No. 5 Oklahoma State beats No. 4 Oregon to set up a Final Four of Alabama vs. Oklahoma State and Penn State vs. Notre Dame.
