Former West Catholic football coach Dan Rohn hired as new Warren De La Salle coach - MLive.com

The Warren De La Salle football team has hired a new football coach to take over the program in the midst of a controversial hazing scandal.

According to the De La Salle website, former Grand Rapids West Catholic coach Dan Rohn has been hired into the head coach position for the Pilots’ football program.

Rohn coached nine seasons at West Catholic, compiling a 99-19 record while winning four Division 5 state titles before stepping down in 2016 to pursue business obligations. His hiatus from football did not last long as he was hired by the Ferris State football team in the same year. This last season, Rohn was the assistant head coach and quarterbacks for a Ferris State squad that made the NCAA Division II national semifinals. He also coach nine years at Fremont before his time at West Catholic.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome Dan Rohn to our Lasallian community,” President John M. Knight said in the De La Salle release. “Dan’s background of success in forming young people of faith, compassion and conviction is a great fit for De La Salle Collegiate.”

According to the release, Rohn said coaching at the collegiate level “wasn’t the right fit” for him.

“I went to Ferris because I thought I wanted to coach college after achieving a lot of things in high school and it just wasn’t the right fit,” he said in the release. “I took almost three years to find the right place that I thought would be the right fit for me. The minute I walked into De La Salle I got a feeling that I’m used to and comfortable with.

“Being back at a Catholic school is important to me. I just love the sense of commitment that the kids and the parents and everybody feels and shares. I’m not saying you don’t get it at a public school in some communities, but it’s just a different feel, a different investment, a different environment in the Catholic and private school settings.”

Rohn is a 1989 graduate of Muskegon Orchard View High School and went on to become a running back at Grand Valley State University.

Rohn takes over the De La Salle football program during a tumultuous time, as seven students have been arraigned on charges of assault and battery in their alleged involvement in hazing incidents within the football team. Five have been arraigned as adults while two are being charged as minors.

Former De La Salle coach Mike Giannone was fired in December after leading the team to Division 2 state titles in 2017 and 2018. De La Salle forfeited its playoff opening game last season after the school announced it had found evidence of hazing within the program.

Multiple reports said football players forced teammates to lay on the ground in their underwear and be prodded by a broomstick around the buttocks. Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said “their was no penetration” during the hazing in the initial investigation.
