Football: Cadets Take Home Third Straight Maple Sap Bucket Victory - norwichathletics.com

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Norwich University football team was victorious in a non-conference game against in-state rival Castleton.

Norwich (1-2) compiled 401 total yards offensively while holding Castleton (2-1) to 328 in the contest.  Mitchell Theal (Elma, N.Y.) threw for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns, while the running game received support from Nate Parady (Saint Albans, Vt.) and Justin Bryant (Eliot, Maine) who together compiled a net yardage of 113 yards.

Wide recievers Haleola Thomas (Waianae, Hawaii) and Trevor Chase (Eliot, Maine) each surpassed the 100-yard mark, with both recivers totaling 104 yards in the game.

Defensively for the Cadets, Ethan Amburn (Suffield, Conn.) was in on 11 tackles Patrick Keefe (Andover, Mass.), and Zev Motew (Highland Park, Ill.) both had eight and Avantaye Salomon (New York, N.Y.) had seven including a tackle for loss.

The Cadets opened up the game with a 9 play 75-yard drive that took a total of 4:10 off the clock. The drive was capped off by an 11-yard touchdown pass by Theal to Tristan Johnson (Ocala, Fla.).

Castleton responded by driving down the field on the ensuing possession, but the Cadet defense held them to a 38-yard field goal.

On Norwich's third drive of the game, the Cadets began the drive at their 46 yard line, but found themselves at the Castleton 35 after a series of rushes and penalties. Theal once again found the endzone, with a 35-yard connection with Thomas.

After another Castleton field goal to start the third quarter, the Cadets connected on a 56-yard pass from Theal to Chase for another touchdown.  Norwich scored again on their next possession, when Parady broke off a 35-yard rushing touchdown.

Castleton would strike once in the fourth quarter with a 10 play, 49-yard drive. The Cadets held on for the 28-12 victory.

With the victory, Head Coach Mark Murnyack moves to second all-time with 49 wins.  He is now only behind Barry Mynter who ended his tenure with the Cadets with 75 total wins.

The Cadets will now shift their focus to Endicott, who they will play on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.  They will then begin NEWMAC play when they travel to Coast Guard for a 1:30 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Sept. 2.
