Boston College Football to Wear Red Bandana Jerseys for Sept. 11th Game @ UMass - BC Interruption

Jason Baum, BC’s Senior Associate AD for Communications, announced today on Twitter that Jeff Hafley intends for the Boston College football team to wear their Red Bandana jerseys for September 11th’s game against UMass.

The Red Bandana jerseys have been a now long-running tradition at Boston College to honor BC grad Welles Crowther, who is known for his heroics on September 11th, 2001 as The Man in the Red Bandana. You can watch the full documentary here.

A note: we haven’t seen Adidas’s version of the Red Bandana jerseys yet! Up until this season, they had exclusively been made by Under Armour, but BC Football’s apparel deal has now flipped over to Adidas. Expect a uniform reveal in the coming week, and we’ll be here to break it down with you.

Usually, BC holds its own Red Bandana game at home to honor Welles. This usually occurs in November (for some inexplicable reason) against a marquee opponent. For example, BC had a primetime game in 2019 against Kansas on Friday September 13th broadcasted on ESPN, but instead elected to hold the Red Bandana game for November 9th’s 12pm match-up against FSU.

As of now, we assume that BC will still hold its annual Red Bandana game, likely to be Friday November 5th against Virginia Tech if trends continue, and that this additional wearing of the jerseys against UMass is a one-time occurrence for 9/11’s 20th anniversary.
