The Notre Dame football team saw Darren Agu de-commit on Sunday, and we detail what it means for the program moving forward.
Back in April, the Notre Dame football program landed a solid commitment from Darren Agu, a three-star defensive end out of Georgia. Agu was the third defensive end to join the Irish in the 2022 recruiting class, as the program had already landed Aiden Gobairs and Tyson Ford.
However, Agu lasted only three months as a commit to the Irish, as he announced on Sunday that he would be de-committing from the school, and restarting his recruitment. For other programs, this could have been viewed as a devastating loss, but when it comes to the Notre Dame football program, there is still plenty of talent left over.
Notre Dame football is loaded with defensive line commits
Just look at the 2022 recruiting class, as they have added both Gobairs and Ford, two very talented players, and both four-star recruits per 247Sports.com. In 2023, the Irish are bringing in both Keon Keeley and Brenan Vernon, four-star recruits as well, and two guys who should be able to dominate at the collegiate level in a few years.
Irish Illustrated’s Tom Loy stated that the reason for Agu moving on from the Irish, and reopening his recruitment was the fact that the program does have so much depth at his position group. After being offered by so many schools, Agu will certainly be able to find a home, as at the time of his commitment, he held 31 offers from the likes of Alabama, Penn State, Auburn, and many more big-time programs.
Overall, the loss of Agu is a tough one, as he had the potential to be a very good player at the collegiate level. However, with so much talent on the roster, as well as the guys coming in with the rest of the 2022 class, and the 2023 commits, this is a position group that is going to be fine with, or without him.
