Football to return to Shreveport's Centenary College - Associated Press

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — After more than 50 years without a football program, the game is returning to Centenary College.

“We haven’t played football here for quite some time, but the wait is over. Today, I am so excited and proud to announce that Centenary will be bringing college football back to Shreveport-Bossier City,” Centenary President Christopher Holoman said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The game’s expected return is set for fall 2024.

A nationwide search for a head coach is underway and is expected to be completed in early 2022. Applications to join a conference will begin immediately. Centenary is currently a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for all sports except women’s gymnastics, which is in the Midwest Independent Conference, and men’s lacrosse which competes in the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference.

Improvements will be made to Mayo Field, current home of the Ladies and Gents soccer teams and the Gents lacrosse team, in preparation for the facility to also host the new football team.

The college has received gifts totaling more than $1.25 million to support bringing back college football, Holoman said.

“I am so grateful for the enthusiastic support that we have received from the Shreveport-Bossier City community and we look forward to hosting exciting college football Saturdays right here in the heart of the city,” Holoman said.

The Gents’ first football game was in 1894 and its final contest was in November 1941. The last time the small, liberal arts college had a football program was during an attempted revival in the ’60s.

Athletic Director David Orr said adding the football program is “an opportunity to engage the Shreveport-Bossier City community with Centenary College through arguably the most community-engage sport: football.”
