Five No. 1 teams will be in action tonight, trying to reach next week’s Super 7 at Birmingham’s new Protective Stadium.

Tonight’s state semifinals include the top-ranked teams in 6A (Clay-Chalkville), 5A (Pike Road), 4A (Madison Academy), 3A (Montgomery Catholic) and 1A (Brantley).

Those teams will be trying to join Thompson and Central-Phenix City, which already have clinched spots in the Class 7A title game.

8:45 PM, Not so fast: Caleb McCreary with 3 straight completions for Catholic, the last one for 23 yards and a TD. No. 1 Catholic has tied MA 7-7 with 8:11 left.

8:34 PM, Upset still in the making: Montgomery Academy maintains its 7-0 lead over Montgomery Catholic entering the fourth quarter. Catholic beat MA 42-0 in the regular season and had outscored its opponents 629-33 entering this game. Wow. Would be the upset of the night.

In 2A: Clarke County leads Highland Home 21-13 as they start the third.

In 3A: Piedmont 24, Saks 16 (8:11 3rd)

In 5A: Pleasant Grove 27, Fairview 3: Demarcus Lacey goes 83 yards for his second touchdown of the night.

In 6A: Mountain Brook 15, Clay-Chalkville 12 (9:09 left in the third). Louisville commit Khalib Johnson with a 22-yard TD pass. Good one in Mountain Brook as expected.

8:34 PM, Vigor TD: Anthony Mix Jr. with a 61-yard TD pass. Mix also completes the 2-point pass to Abraham Daniels. Wolves lead Jackson 21-14 with 10:24 left in the third quarter.

8:24 PM, Making headlines: Wadley could be closing in on their first trip to a state title game. The Bulldogs lead Pickens County 27-8 starting the third quarter.

8:18 PM, Starting the 3rd: Class 4A No. 1 Madison Academy has tied Oneonta 14-14 with 9:16 left in the third quarter.

6A: Mountain Brook 15, Clay-Chalkville 6 (half)

8:06 PM, Spartans build on lead: Mountain Brook bumps its lead on No. 1 Clay-Chalkville to 15-6 on a Colvin TD pass.

7:50 PM, Shocker in Montgomery? Montgomery Academy leads rival Catholic 7-0 at the half. The undefeated Knights have outscored the competition 629-33 this year, but they trail in the semifinals at the half. Catholic beat MA 42-0 in the regular season.

7:05 PM, Touchdown Aggies: Walter Taylor III hits Tylen Campbell with a 31-yard TD pass. Jackson takes the opening kickoff for a TD against Vigor. Aggies lead 7-0.

7:02 PM, A turnover starts it: Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff at Hueytown. Hillcrest with the ball at the Hueytown 25.

6:50 PM, Rematch in Mobile: Vigor will host Jackson in the 4A semifinals at Blount High School. The Wolves defeated the Aggies 39-13 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium earlier this year. Jackson hasn’t lost since.

6:46 PM, Panther Pride: Mars Hill also trying to return to the state championship game. The Panthers take on Cleveland tonight in the 2A semifinals. We are less than 15 minutes away.

6:44 PM, Back to the Super 7: Pleasant Grove will try to return for the third straight year tonight against surprising Fairview. The Spartans lost in each of the last 2 Class 5A title games.

6:37 PM, Offense vs. Defense: Sounds simple, right? It might not be tonight in the 6A semifinal between high-octane Clay-Chalkville and stingy Mountain Brook.

6:30 PM, Mr. Football? Is the guy below Mr. Football? Earl Woods has put up some huge numbers for Hueytown this fall. Tonight he hopes to get the Gopers to the Class 6A title game.
