Fireworks Continue For WVU Football With Commitment of Justin Williams | WVU | West Virginia Mountaineers sports coverage - Blue Gold News

Justin Williams on his WVU official visit

West Virginia continued a fireworks-worthy holiday weekend when Georgia running back Justin Williams announced his commitment to the Mountaineer football program on Monday afternoon.

After piling up 1,477 rushing yards as a junior, Williams built his scholarship offer list from a starting point of schools such as Akron, Liberty, Duke, Tennessee Tech, and Western Kentucky to a star-studded list which included Arkansas, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi, Memphis, Missouri, N.C. State, Nebraska, Pitt, Tennessee, USF, and Vanderbilt. West Virginia was in an earlier group of many of the Power 5 schools to offer Williams, getting on board on January 12. Demonstrating his academic prowess, he also held offers from Ivy League schools Princeton and Yale.

The offensive player of the year and MVP for East Paulding High School as a junior, Williams added 286 receiving yards to his junior production, and totaled 19 touchdowns in helping the Raiders to a 5-5 record in Class AAAAAA action. He missed seven games due to injury as a sophomore, but still piled up enough highlights to begin attracting attention from recruiters.

An explosive runner who hits top speed quickly, Williams is at his best when making a quick decision and getting the ball vertically as quickly as possible. His mechanics at the top of running plays are very good, as he keeps his head and eyes upfield while taking handoffs, which allows him to scan his blocking and the defense in order to pick his optimal running lane.

His rushing game isn’t all about speed, however. He flashes the ability to be patient behind blocks, especially on a handful of swing and screen passes, and he also demonstrates solid catching ability on a couple of seam routes, keeping his path straight downfield while turning his upper body to track the pass. He also shows some good moves in traffic, offering a dead leg to avoid contact and finishing runs with determination.

Williams visited West Virginia’s campus on the weekend of June 11-13, noting he had a “PHENOMENAL time at WVU”.

Williams is the 12th verbal commitment in football class of 2022, the seventh offensive player and the first running back. The Mountaineers have an excellent spread of early talent on that side of the ball, including quarterback Nicco Marchiol, wide receiver Jarel Williams and offensive linemen Sullivan Weidman, Charlie Katarincic and Maurice Hamilton. Corbin Page, a potential tight end, could also wind up as a defensive end or tackle in the future.
