A 19-year-old man who helped Liberty High School in Brentwood to one the best football seasons in school history died Sunday night in a head-on car crash suspected to have been caused by driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said.

Devon Willis died at the scene after another vehicle crossed the broken yellow lines on Highway 4 in Stockton and crashed into Willis’ car. Willis, who was traveling east on the highway, was heading home to see family, according to friends, who have started a fundraiser for him, and former coaches.

The CHP did not identify the person driving the other vehicle, citing the investigation. That person was arrested on suspicion of DUI, CHP spokesman Ofcr. Ruben Jones said.

The crash happened just east of the Whiskey Slew Road exit.

Willis earned the nickname “Texas” while playing for the Lions after moving to Discovery Bay from Texas, fundraiser organizer Analiese Almgren wrote on the fundraising page. He was a defensive back as a senior on the 2017 Liberty team that won the first North Coast Section championship in school history.

He was slated to attend Diablo Valley College this fall and was planning to play football, according to Almgren.

The fundraiser is designed to help Willis’ family bring him back to Texas for his burial. It was seeking $15,000 and had raised more than $12,700 by 12:30 p.m.
