Pensacola-area coaches seemed to all agree that the excitement to return to summer conditioning on June 15 outweighed the awkward feeling of following foreign guidelines to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
The original plan was to follow the phase one guidelines for two weeks, and Escambia County Athletic Director Roger Mayo confirmed the second phase will begin June 29.

Players are now permitted to be on campus for two hours per day, allowing an extra 60 minutes of conditioning with social distancing at the forefront of each activity.
Players and coaches will all receive temperature checks and confirm they have not knowingly been exposed to an individual who is carrying the virus before entering the campus.
Teams will be able to access weight rooms, and will be instructed to sanitize equipment and allot time for a drying period.

Sports that are classified as low-risk for virus spread, such as tennis and cross country, are able to begin modified practices.
Medium risk sports like baseball and softball cannot scrimmage, but can begin drills with some sports-related equipment like bats and gloves.
During the first two weeks, no sports-related equipment was permitted.
High risk sports, such as football, cheerleading, basketball and volleyball will be guided to focus sessions around conditioning and strength training.
Though football coaches will now be able to use footballs for drills, with proper sanitation between sets.
Sleds, tackling dummies and other high-contact equipment is still not permitted to be used.
“The return to conditioning is an exciting time for the players and coaches,” Mayo said. “They’ve been eager to get back and participate in the sports that they are so passionate about. We have some guidelines to minimize the risk and we strive to be perfect each day. These are different times and we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do.”
Escambia head coach Mike Bennett believes that much like the first two weeks, the next phase will focus primarily on conditioning, speed and agility.
Though, he is excited to let his quarterbacks and receivers begin to build chemistry while running routes, throwing and catching passes.
“The first hour of our days will be about if not exactly the same as the first two weeks,” Bennett said. “I think these guidelines are good, we just want to get these kids back in shape because without spring football, a lot of haven’t been able to work out and stay in shape. Whatever the guidelines are, we are going to go by them. Hopefully we can get some practices going and get back to playing soon.
“As for this next phase, it’s going to be fun to watch these guys move around a little more and throw and catch some passes.”
Pine Forest head coach Ronnie Douglas was pleased with the first two weeks of conditioning, adding that he received great feedback from countless coaches and players.
Douglas sees the extra hour as great benefit, saying that certain times of the first two weeks felt slightly rushed.
“I thought the first two weeks were a good way to bring them back,” Douglas said. “Just being able to get them for a bit longer will be great. That’s going to allow us to teach a bit more. You can’t work them out for a whole two hours, but we can get some work in, teach some football 101, work them out again and go over playbook-type stuff.”
Escambia County originally scheduled three, two-week plans from June 15-July 27, leading up to the FHSAA scheduled date of practice starts.
Monday’s new period will run through July 11, when the third period is scheduled to begin July 13.
