Most experienced Big 12 football teams ahead of the 2020 season - 247Sports

As college football continues to grapple with the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is becoming clearer that returning experience could prove to be a bigger factor than most years in the success of a team during the 2020 season.

When the Big 12 Conference suspended all regular-season competitions, on- and off-campus recruiting, and out-of-season practices on March 12, half of the league’s teams — Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, West Virginia — had just begun practice with TCU (February 28) starting the earliest in the league.

That means five Big 12 teams did not have a spring football.

ESPN has devised a formula to calculate a team’s returning production percentage. On offense, the formula is derived from the percentage of last season’s quarterback passing yards returning, percentage of last season’s receiving yards returning at wide receiver and tight end, percentage of returning career starts on the offensive line, percentage of last season’s offensive line snaps returning, and percentage of last season’s running back rushing yards returning.

On defense, it includes the percentage of defensive returning production from the defensive line, secondary and from the full defense.

Here’s which Big 12 teams could be further ahead heading toward the 2020 season based upon the returning experience factor, as derived by ESPN’s formula:
