CLEVELAND, Ohio — Predicting whether there will be a high school football season in 2020 is just as tough as picking a winner for the game of the week on any fall weekend.
While the Ohio High School Athletic Association and its members are now in "Phase 2" of restarting their sports seasons, they still must get to the next phase just for football teams to be permitted to conduct seven-on-seven passing scrimmages. It could still be even longer until full-contact practices and scrimmages are allowed to happen.
Once, and if, they are, the countdown will be on for the 2020 season. With that in mind, here is a look at what every weekend this fall could entail with a week-by-week schedule of the high school football season.
All times are 7 p.m., unless noted. Games are ordered alphabetically by home team.

WEEK 1
Mark the calendar: Avon at Avon Lake — For the second straight year, these neighboring rivals open the season in a matchup that quickly establishes the favorite for the Southwestern Conference championship. They last met in the Division II, Region 6 championship, won 20-3 by Avon, and both teams return enough to be considered preseason Top 10 teams in the area.
Another annual Week 1 opener, loaded with Division I college recruits, is Glenville at Euclid. It will showcase Glenville’s Michael Gravely Jr., who is headed to Michigan State at safety but expected to contribute on both sides of the football, and Euclid’s quartet for D-I recruits with Kentucky-bound receiver Armond Scott and Air Force commit Atiba Fitz. Playoff points should be at stake for Solon at Hudson, while Brecksville — with reigning cleveland.com Offensive Player of the Year and Iowa commit Joe Labas — visit Olmsted Falls in a potential Division II, Region 6 playoff preview.
The scoreboard operator in Painesville could be busy at Riverside, which hosts Perry and West Virginia running back commit Jaylen Anderson.
Here's a full look at Week 1.

WEEK 2
Mark the calendar: Mentor at St. Ignatius — Week 2 begins Friday night with some potent matchups, including St. Edward traveling to Euclid. A night later, Mentor visits Byers Field and the Wildcats. Returning Division I Northeast Lakes District Offensive Player of the Year Ian Kipp is back behind center for the Cardinals. Two years ago, he picked up his second varsity win at Byers Field. Around this time, he could be looking to help first-year coach Matt Gray to his second varsity win after taking over for Steve Trivisonno, who recently accepted the offensive coordinator’s job at Hilliard Bradley following a brief retirement. St. Ignatius will give chase with Northwestern commit Aidan Hubbard and fellow senior Bennett Adler.
Elsewhere, Division III state semifinalist Aurora plays host to St. Vincent-St. Mary. That not only could be a playoff preview but a strength vs. strength matchup of the Greenmen's defensive line vs. STVM's run game with junior George Linberger. Aurora graduated a slew of linebackers, including A.J. Barner to Ohio University, but junior Kevin Paul emerged last year on what coach Bob Mihalik expects to be a deep line. Speaking of strengths, Revere travels to Eastlake North in a matchup for offensive line aficionados. Revere's Ben Christman is headed next year to Ohio State, and North junior Ryan Baer could be bound for a Power Five school in two years.

Mark the calendar: St. Edward at Mentor — The Cardinals have won seven of their last eight games against the Eagles and St. Ignatius. They will put that run of success on the line again, when they face St. Edward and the Wildcats in back-to-back weeks before the Greater Cleveland Conference portion of their schedule. The Eagles are looking to avenge their 36-35 overtime loss last year to Mentor in the Division I regional finals.
Meanwhile, St. Ignatius plays host to Archbishop Hoban a year after the Wildcats’ thrilling 42-41 comeback win in Akron. Avon welcomes Glenville in a first-time matchup for two playoff regulars and Cleveland Heights welcomes back former coach Jeff Rotsky and Euclid.

WEEK 4
Mark the calendar: Solon at Mentor — The Cardinals will have one fewer day (on a Thursday night) to get ready for Solon, which shocked them two years ago at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium with a two-point conversion pass in overtime. Quarterback Pat McQuaide, who tossed that winning pass, is still around for his senior year. He also will bring an experienced squad with 1,000-yard running back Khalil Eichelberger and Northwestern commit Najee Story at defensive end. Following St. Edward, St. Ignatius and Solon, does any team in the state have a tougher three-week stretch than Mentor?
A week after one coach reunion with Euclid's Jeff Rotsky taking his squad to Cleveland Heights, Kirtland's Tiger LaVerde is scheduled to return to his alma mater for a matchup with Oil City (Pa.).
The Western Reserve Conference opens with favorites Chardon and Riverside meeting in Painesville. Coach Dave Bors' Beavers get the Hilltoppers and Perry at home in the first four weeks, which could help their bid to be one of the area's most-improved teams. They won four games last year, but are slated to return two-way standout Matt Spofford, James Bruno and much more. Chardon has one of the area's deepest defense with a slew of All-Ohio and all-district linebackers and edge rusher Myles Mendeszoon, who is headed to Iowa State.
The Suburban League also has a strong start with two big games involving its three defending co-champions in the National Division: Brecksville at Stow and Hudson at Wadsworth, which ended with Caleb Junko’s 46-yard kick last year to stun the Grizzlies. Stow is the one team among those four not to win a Suburban League share last year, but that could change this fall with coach Tom Phillips’ most experienced squad in his three years leading the Bulldogs.

WEEK 5
Mark the calendar: Hudson at Brecksville — Depending on how Week 4 turns out, this could further swing the Suburban League or be an elimination game for title contention between two of last year's three co-champions. Expect a high-scoring affair. Not only is Labas back with two bookend tackles protecting him, a top target in Jeremy Jonozzo and running back Garret Kubitz, but Hudson has a similar experience at those positions. Dual-threat quarterback Jacob Paltani leads the Explorers with 1,000-yard back Drew Lightner, top receiver Luke McLaughlin and Rutgers commit Kevin Toth at tackle.
Meanwhile, St. Ignatius heads to Stark County for a showdown with Division II state runner-up Massillon. The GCC will be sizzling in Medina County and southern Cuyahoga County with Mentor at Medina and rivals Brunswick at Strongsville. Speaking of rivalries, it's north vs. south in the Western Reserve Conference: Willoughby South at Eastlake North.
Defending WRC champion Mayfield heads to Chardon in a rematch of last year’s 21-7 win for the Wildcats, who are bringing back fourth-year starting quarterback Michael Huss.
A big Southwestern Conference matchup of playoff hopefuls also takes place with Avon at Olmsted Falls. It's a loaded Week 5 to end the first half of the regular season.

WEEK 6
Mark the calendar: St. Edward vs. Benedictine at Euclid — Saturday night's main event is the result of Benedictine's beefed up schedule following the disbanding of the North Coast League. The Bengals not only will play their home games at Euclid, moving from Bedford, but they added four playoff teams to their 2020 schedule, including the Eagles. Benedictine brings back much of its offense from last year's 10-win team that made the Division II regional semifinals with 2,000-yard quarterback Ronnie Schultz and a trio of receivers, led by Chris Gales. They will be pushed by a St. Edward defense, which includes several Division I college prospects in junior defensive end Trey Bixby and senior linebacker C.J. Hankins. Cornerbacks Jaylen and Joel Castleberry also could be matched up with those Bengals receivers, but this matchup could be all about what's up front for both squads. They last met in 2010. St. Edward won, 45-0, during some down years for the Bengals. That has since changed.
West of Cleveland, the SWC will see Avon Lake visit Amherst in a showdown of not only conference title but playoff hopefuls in Division II. The Chagrin Valley Conference will see several sizzling smaller-school matchups with Cuyahoga Heights at Wickliffe and new member Crestwood, which left the Portage Trail Conference, visiting Beachwood.

WEEK 7
Mark the calendar: St. Edward vs. St. Ignatius — Since 2016, St. Ignatius’ home games in this matchup have moved to FirstEnergy Stadium. That has yet to be confirmed this year, and the season’s uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic does not help. It’s still Greater Cleveland’s biggest rivalry and can certainly pack Byers Field — if permitted — this fall. What could define this year’s matchup are first-year starting quarterbacks and the defenders chasing after them. Those pass rushers have already been mentioned. Juniors Christian Ramos of St. Edward and Jaxon French of St. Ignatius have been touted as favorites to win their schools’ starting quarterback jobs. The Eagles edge the Wildcats, 7-3, last year in Lakewood.
Aside from the big independents that Saturday night, Euclid visits Solon a night earlier in a vital Greater Cleveland Conference matchup. Solon senior Pat McQuaide lifted the Comets last year, 27-24, with a late drive on the road. Also, Chagrin Falls could challenge Perry for supremacy in the CVC’s Chagrin Division. The Akron City Series could also be decided with Akron East at Buchtel. Benedictine and Hoban also renew their rivalry, despite the NCL breakup.

WEEK 8
Mark the calendar: Archbishop Hoban vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary at InfoCision Stadium — A week after Cleveland’s big Catholic school rivalry, the one in Akron takes center stage. Hoban has a seven-game win streak, which includes Division III playoff wins in 2015 and ’16. STVM last won in 2014 with a 33-27 triple overtime victory. The Knights took last year’s matchup, 30-0.
Meanwhile, farther north, Maple Heights visits rival Cleveland Heights matchup of Lake Erie League favorites. The Tigers won last year and Maple took the 2018 encounter, with the title, in third-year coach Shaq Washington's first season leading his alma mater. The Mustangs bring back two-way starter Delonte Hall from that team with sophomore quarterback Dawon King. Both teams have some of the area's most imposing guards with Cleveland Heights junior Maurice Hamilton (6-foot-3, 330 pounds) and the Mustangs' tandem of Roger Smith and Timothy Alonzo (both at least 6-3 and between 285 and 320 pounds).
More big smaller-school rivalries take place, led by Portage Trail Conference powers Garrettsville Garfield at Mogadore. Both teams bring back a significant number of standouts from last year.

WEEK 9
Mark the calendar: Mentor at Euclid — Both teams will have faced Solon, which should have a significant impact on the Greater Cleveland Conference race. The Comets will play Brunswick on this Week 9 Friday night in another big matchup, as all will figure into the Division I, Region 1 playoff standings. Mentor ran away from the Panthers last year, 45-0, to win its third straight GCC crown.
Elsewhere, Aurora visits Revere for what could be a vital matchup in the Suburban League’s American Division, as the bulls lock horns up front with Revere’s Christman and Co. vs. the Greenmen. Olmsted Falls visits Avon with SWC and Division II playoff points at stake. Outside of Avon Lake in Week 1 last year, Olmsted Falls came the closest to threatening Avon’s undefeated run, 24-14.

WEEK 10
Mark the calendar: Archbishop Hoban vs. St. Edward at Lakewood — The bright side of the North Coast League’s breakup is a Week 10 clash like this. St. Edward beat Hoban, 10-7, in 2017. They met in Akron on a one-year deal. Coach Tim Tyrrell joked then that the matchup came about after he and St. Edward’s Tom Lombardo agreed to it over some Cokes at a coaches’ meeting. While St. Edward’s new quarterback should be settled in by Week 10, Hoban senior Shane Hamm will be the state’s most experienced quarterback by then. He enters this season with 41 starts behind him.
Also, two SWC matchups should have playoff and championship implications with Avon at Amherst and Avon Lake at Olmsted Falls. Wadsworth and Brecksville could be meeting for at least a share of the Suburban League like they did last year, when the Grizzlies eked out a 35-34 win to claim a share of their third straight title. The Wadsworth defense stopped Brecksville on a late two-point conversion try last year and brings back some of the standouts from that effort, including all-district linebacker Jamisen Jackson and Iowa State commit Carston Marshall.
