Know your football signals? See if you can sweep this ‘Jeopardy’ category - AL.com

The last time “Jeopardy!” dedicated an entire category to football, all three contestants whiffed on every single answer, to the amusement and disappointment of Alex Trebek. This time, the Canadian-born game show host provided some hand-drawn and acted-out visual aids, and it mostly worked.

During Tuesday’s episode, Trebek introduced the category “Football” and prefaced by assuring the players he’d help them through it so as not to draw a complete blank with the five answers.

“Now last year, we had some difficulty with the football category, so we thought we would try it again,” Trebek said when he introduced it. “But in this category, it deals entirely with referee signals, and I’m going to be giving you three players the signals, OK?”

Can you provide the correct responses for the five clues? Play along below, or watch the video above.

For $200: “Offensive teams love to see this sign. It means points.” [Trebek extends both of his arms straight up above his head.]

Correct response: Touchdown.

For $400: “An equal opportunity foul, it can be called against offense or defense.” [Trebek grasps one wrist, the fist clenched, in front of his chest.]

Correct response: Holding.

For $600: “Just a little pre-snap movement by an offensive lineman causes this 5-yard penalty.” [Trebek rolls his hands over one another.]

Correct response: False start.

For $800: “Offensive teams don’t like to see this sign given against them.” [Trebek holds one fist in the air.]

Correct response: Fourth down. (No correct response given; players answered “foul” and “personal foul.")

For $1000: “Careful if playing Green Bay -- Aaron Rodgers loves to catch defenses in this foul.” [Trebek puts to hands on top of his head.]

Correct response: Too many men on the field. (No correct response given; one player answered “offsides.")

“All right, we got about half of them there," Trebek said once the category concluded.

College football also came up on a recent episode during the player introductions when Trebek reminded a Michigan fan that Alabama “smoked” the Wolverines in the Citrus Bowl.
