Coronavirus fears lead to Tulsa football quarantine - 247Sports

Two players on Tulsa's football team have been quarantined as a coronavirus precaution, according to The Tulsa World. The two roommates were quarantined earlier this week after a relative of one of the players was diagnosed with the virus in Oklahoma.

The relative, a woman, was diagnosed four days after the first positive test in Tulsa County, Oklahoma. The two positive tests currently in Oklahoma came after each person visited Italy.

All on-campus athletic events for the rest of the week have been canceled or postponed including a spring football practice scheduled for Thursday, the athletic department announced Wednesday. Athletic facilities are being disinfected, sources told the World. TU athletic teams will follow the university’s travel guidelines, which currently allow travel to road competitions as scheduled. The men’s basketball team is leaving Wednesday for Fort Worth, Texas, to play in the American Athletic Conference tournament starting Friday.

Now labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the coronavirus has already forced several cancellation in college basketball this week, along with the NBA moving toward games without fans in the coming days.

“In the past two weeks the number of cases outside China has increased thirteenfold and the number of affected countries has tripled,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday. “In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries to climb even higher.”

Several universities stateside have moved to online classes only for the remainder of the month or have cancelled the remaining spring semester entirely due to the growing virus. Cases in China, where the virus originated, and South Korea have declined over the past few weeks.

Ghebreyesus said 81 countries don’t have any confirmed cases and 57 countries have 10 or fewer cases.

“We can not say this loudly enough or clearly enough or often enough: All countries can still change the course of this pandemic,” he said. “Some countries are struggling with a lack of capacity. Some countries are struggling with a lack of resources. Some countries are struggling with a lack of resolve.”
