In the midst of a nationwide crisis, LSU's Ed Orgeron and Ryan Day at Ohio State were two of the nation's few in the coaching profession to publicly advocate for social distancing and remaining in isolation this week to combat the spread of the coronavirus. With spring practice wiped away and upcoming season increasingly in doubt, halting transmission of the disease is vital for college football's return.
"We are in a health crisis, as all of you know, and unprecedented times," Day said in a video distributed on social media by the Buckeyes. "And I just wanted to give a message to everybody to let them know that we're in this thing together. And that although, while a lot of us and our loved ones are going to be affected by this physically, mentally and financially, that we are in this thing together.
"And at times like this, this is when we need to come together even more. And even though we may be in kind of isolation or quarantined, Buckeye Nation is strong and we're going to get through this together.
Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said this week that football represents nearly 85 percent of the university's athletic revenue annually, which is likely close to the numbers at most major programs. LSU, Ohio State and Florida, among others, are considered national title contenders five months out from the start of the season according to updated odds.
