Cabrillo football program faces possible probation - Santa Cruz Sentinel

The Cabrillo College football program’s most decorated season over the past two decades could be stricken from the record books. Moreover, the Seahawks are facing a possible two-year probation period — which would include a two-year postseason ban — for violating the California Community College Athletic Association’s constitution this past season.

Cabrillo’s athletics and human resources departments conducted an internal investigation and self-reported the program’s infraction to the CCCAA, Northern California Football Conference Gary Kollenborn confirmed Thursday.

Kollenborn said the Seahawks reported they violated Bylaw 1.2 of the CCCAA constitution, which pertains to Athletic Eligibility, specifically players receiving “impermissible benefits.”

Kollenborn declined to further elaborate since no ruling has been made. Cabrillo has two weeks to appeal the infraction with the CCCAA Board of College Presidents.

A source told the Sentinel the infraction pertains to housing benefits and involved 14 players. The Seahawks had 20 out-of-state players listed on their 56-player 2019 roster on the school’s athletics website. A total of 37 players played high school football at schools located outside Santa Cruz County.

Seahawks athletics director Mark Ramsey also said he couldn’t speak about specifics until after a ruling. As of Thursday, Ramsey said he hadn’t met with Cabrillo president Dr. Matthew Wetstein, who was out of town on business, to decide if the school should appeal the infraction.

“If you’re aware of an infraction, you’re obligated to report it,” Ramsey said. “Any time something like this happens, it’s unfortunate. I don’t want this to be part of our program. I’m happy with the way we handled it. We’re still a high-character, high-quality athletic program across the board.”

Kollenborn said he was impressed by the way Cabrillo conducted itself after realizing the violation.

“They self-reported it,” said Kollenborn, a former head football coach at rival Hartnell. “Mark has been very cooperative. Most schools, normally it’s deny, deny. I was impressed with the way they handled it. And for an old Hartnell coach to say that about Cabrillo, that’s tough.”

Under third-year head coach Darren Arbet, the Seahawks went 8-3 overall last season, 4-2 in the American-Golden Coast Conference for a third-place finish. It was the program’s best record since going 10-1 in 1999.

Cabrillo qualified for the Living Breath Foundation Bowl at Rabobank Stadium, which it lost to conference foe Monterey Peninsula, falling 24-17 on a trick play. It was the Seahawks’ first bowl game since 2007.

Arbet coached the now-defunct San Jose Sabercats to four ArenaBowl titles before taking over at Cabrillo in 2017. He went 2-8 in his first season in Aptos — the program’s ninth straight campaign without a winning record — but turned the program around a year later. The Seahawks went 7-3 in 2018.
