Patriot League GEICO Football Players of the Week Announced (10.18.21) - Patriot League Official Athletic Site

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross collected two of the four Patriot League GEICO weekly football awards when the League office announced honors on Monday. Colgate and Fordham claimed one weekly award apiece.
 
Holy Cross senior linebacker Liam Anderson received Patriot League Football GEICO Defensive Player of the Week. He returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to go along with 1.5 TFLs and a half-sack in the Crusaders’ 48-14 win over Georgetown. Freshman wide receiver Justin Shorter collected Patriot League GEICO Rookie of the Week honors after totaling 112 all-purpose yards, including 63 receiving yards.
 
Colgate senior defensive back/return specialist Will Gruber claimed Patriot League GEICO Special Teams Player of the Week. He returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and blocked a field goal in the Raiders’ loss to Cornell on Friday.
 
Fordham senior quarterback Tim DeMorat was named the Patriot League Football GEICO Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after throwing for 318 yards and six touchdowns in the Rams’ 66-21 win over Bucknell.
 
Fordham senior defensive lineman Alfonzo Dixon IV, placekicker Nick Leinenweber, Georgetown sophomore punter/placekicker Conor Hunt, senior wide receiver Joshua Tomas, Holy Cross sophomore quarterback Matthew Sluka, and Lafayette junior linebacker Marco Olivas all received honorable mentions for their performances on Saturday.
 
The Patriot League football players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information directors, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tim DeMorat, Fordham, Sr., QB, Merritt Island, Fla./Viera
*DeMorat completed 26-of-36 passes for 318 yards and six touchdowns in two quarters to lead Fordham to a 66-21 win over Bucknell to improve to 2-0 in League play.
*The Walter Payton Award Watch List nominee tied the Rams’ single-game record with six touchdown passes while posting his third-consecutive 300-yard passing game.
*DeMorat leads the Patriot League and is fourth in the FCS in touchdown passes (21) and points responsible for (132) and passing yards per game (281.0).  
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Liam Anderson, Holy Cross, Sr., LB, Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive
*Anderson had a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown in Holy Cross’s 48-14 win over Georgetown.
*The senior linebacker finished with five tackles, 1.5 TFLs and a half-sack to hold the Hoyas to 242 yards of total offense.
*Anderson is eighth in the Patriot League in tackles per game (7.83) and second in TFLs per game (1.33).
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
William Gruber, Colgate, Sr., DB/RS, Hermitage, Pa./Hickory
*Gruber returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of the Raiders’ Friday-night game against Cornell.
*He became the second player in Colgate football history with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
*Gruber also blocked a Big Red field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FOOTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Justin Shorter, Holy Cross, Fr., WR, Swedesboro, N.J./Blair Academy
*Shorter totaled 112 all-purpose yards in Holy Cross’s 48-14 victory over Georgetown in their League opener.
*He finished second on the team with four catches for 63 receiving yards.
*Shorter also returned a kickoff for 49 yards to open the third quarter.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Alfonzo Dixon IV, Fordham, Sr., DL, Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades
*Dixon recorded eight tackles, 2.5 TFLs and 2.0 sacks in Fordham’s 66-21 victory over Bucknell. He also had one quarterback hurry.
 
Nick Leinenweber, Fordham, Jr., PK, Neptune Beach, Fla./Episcopal
*Leinenweber went 9-for-9 on extra-point attempts and connected on a 24-yard field goal in Fordham’s 66-21 victory over Bucknell.
 
Conor Hunt, Georgetown, So., P/K, Kamuela, Hawaii/Hawaii Preparatory Academy
*Hunt averaged 48.4 yards per punt on five attempts, placing two inside the Holy Cross 20-yard line, with two punts of 50 yards or longer. His 65-yard punt in the third quarter was the longest of his career.
 
Joshua Tomas, Georgetown, Sr., WR, University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee
*Tomas posted game-highs of seven receptions and 113 receiving yards in Georgetown’s loss to Holy Cross. His 58-yard reception in the third quarter was the longest offensive play of the season for the Hoyas and set up GU’s first touchdown of the game.  
 
Matthew Sluka, Holy Cross, So., QB, Locust Valley, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial
*Sluka accounted for four touchdowns, throwing for two and rushing for two in Holy Cross’s 48-14 in their League opener against Georgetown. He threw for 136 yards and rushed for 92. His six rushing touchdowns this season leads the League.
 
Marco Olivas, Lafayette, Jr., LB, Fort Worth, Texas/Fossil Ridge
*Olivas registered 15 tackles, his second straight double-digit tackle performance and fourth of the season in Lafayette’s loss to No. 19 Harvard.
*The junior linebacker added 2.0 tackles for a loss of five yards.
*Olivas is second in the Patriot League and fourth in the FCS, averaging 11.0 tackles per game.
