RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond football head coach Russ Huesman has announced the addition Tarron Williams to his coaching staff Wednesday as cornerbacks coach.
"I would like to thank Coach Huesman and his staff for the opportunity to serve within this program" Williams said. "It's truly an honor to work for such a prestigious institution like the University of Richmond. I am excited to be on board with the Spiders."
Williams joins the Spiders after spending the past two years on staff at East Carolina as the director of player development under head coach Mike Houston. In his role, he worked with the Pirate cornerbacks and assisted staff with implementing scheme and technique during practice and on game days. He was also the pro scout liaison and the academic liaison for the coaching staff. He helped coach Jaquan McMillan to a Second Team All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2020 and a Freshman All-America honor in 2019.
Prior to ECU, Williams spent a season as the cornerbacks coach at VMI under head coach Scott Wachenheim. He was tasked with recruiting Central Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Georgia and Texas for the Keydets. He recruited 2019 Freshman All-American Aljareek Malry and coached Freshman All-American cornerback Collin Loftis in 2018.
Williams spent two years in the Colonial Athletic Association on Houston's staff at James Madison working first as a defensive quality control coach in 2016 and the assistant defensive line coach in 2017. He was part of the Dukes' 2016 National Championship team helping out with the safeties and the 2017 FCS Championship runner-up team where he focused on in-state recruiting. In addition to assisting with the safety position, Williams was also responsible for monitoring academic progress and providing life skills development for the JMU program.
Williams coached three years at Lenoir Rhyne (2010-12) as a graduate assistant in the secondary for Mike Houston's staff. He helped Bears with back-to-back South Atlantic Conference titles during his time. He earned a master's degree in community counseling with school licensure from Lenoir-Rhyne in 2012.
Williams initiated his coaching career as a student assistant coach at Gardner-Webb during the spring of 2009 before accepting his first full-time position as defensive backs coach at Darlington (S.C.) High School.
A three-year starter in the secondary at Gardner-Webb, Williams excelled in the classroom with two selections to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll. He was voted amongst teammates as the utility player of the year, playing three positions in 2008 (CB, FS, Bandit). Additionally, he won the Atlantic Sun Outdoor 100-meter championships in 2006. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from GWU in 2009.
