The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes the institution with the highest collective grade point average in a sport sponsored by the CAA. The team GPA is a calculation of the grade point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster throughout the final day of their respective championship seasons during the 2020-21 academic year.
The Spider Football program posted a team GPA of 3.15 for the 2020-21 academic year, the highest team GPA in program history. The Spiders accomplished the feat despite the challenges put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Associate Director of Academic Support and Director of Football Team Academic Performance Shannon St. Pierre leads the Spiders in all academic endeavors within the program.
The Spiders posted a 3-1 record in the 2021 spring season, finishing the year nationally ranked. Richmond returns all 22 starters from the spring season under fifth-year head coach Russ Huesman. The Spiders open the 2021 fall season September 4 hosting Howard at Robins Stadium.
