A Decade in the Big Ten: Ranking League Football Stadiums - Corn Nation

Hey, July 1st is Nebraska’s 10 year anniversary in the Big Ten! It has been exactly a decade since we got sick of DeLoss Dodds and left for more money, equality, and stability in the greatest football conference this side of the Mason Dixon line.

In honor of this great achievement I have taken it upon myself to do the ever so loved task of ranking the conference football stadiums. In this ranking I have looked at size, quality, food, fan experience, and intimidation factor of each stadium in the conference. I then analyzed all off these factors and threw them out the window.

Folks, this is such a subjective ranking that anyone can twist anything about a stadium and make it look good. You can have a love of shiny new stadiums that would push Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium into the top 3. Or you could love ancient architecture that would put Ohio Stadium at #1.

You can make this ranking whatever you want. Have you read these articles before? People just randomly put whatever stadium or restaurant in the place on this list they so desire.

I am sure there is a Maryland fan somewhere who put Maryland Stadium in their top 3.

So, my rankings are arbitrary. Will you like it? I highly doubt it. But enjoy it like you’ve enjoyed these past ten years in the second greatest Power Five conference in the land.

14. Ryan Field - Northwestern

Northwestern has a good football team. It is home to many fanbases across the Big Ten. This is not a good thing for Northwestern. Northwestern needs their own fans. At least 300 to help fill the stadium. This is also a place where the student body goes to study. That’s a pretty ingenious way of using your stadium.

13. Ross Ade Stadium - Purdue

Purdue has a football stadium. Though, I have never once heard anything good about it other than opponents win there a lot. I hear breakfast is big in West Lafayette. I love breakfast. That’s the only reason they are so high on this list.

12. Memorial Stadium - Champaign - Illinois

Opposing fans go here to watch football. Home fans must stay at home or go to the bars.

11. Memorial Stadium - Bloomington - Indiana

I want to call this stadium the Bloomin’gton Onion. But alas, I cannot. If it was bigger and covered with batter with a dipping bowl in the middle, maybe. So, I shall pass. Outside of that, I really do not have much on Indiana that isn’t related to basketball. It is a nice looking stadium from the sky. Clean lines and what not with a shiny south end zone addition recently.

10. SHI Stadium - Rutgers

They are missing a consonant in the name of this stadium. They also need to move the Fat Sandwiches into the stadium. Well, maybe they should fix the plumbing issue first. Regardless, the Birthplace of College Football deserves the sandwiches. Also, I hope you have the commodes up to date.

9. Maryland Stadium - Maryland

I have no clue what to put on here. It is told that the stadium has an interesting layout and the sight lines are not always the best. There is probably a statue of a turtle outside of it somewhere. I also know you can take the Metro and then a shuttle to the university so that’s nice if you live in Washington D.C. Oh yeah, their uniforms are hard to look at.

8. Spartan Stadium - Michigan State

This is a basketball school who was good at football a few years ago. Tom Osborne beat Nick Saban here a few years back. Since then they have put in new stadium lights. So it has that going for it.

7. Kinnick Stadium - Iowa

It’s your basic Big Ten-esque stadium. They wave to kids. That is pretty sweet in my book. Not going to slam on Iowa today. Sorry everyone who hates Iowa. Also of note, Nebraska has not won a game there since the Obama administration.

6. TCF Bank Huntington Bank Stadium - Minnesota

It’s new and nice. Good sightlines if you want to watch a game. Will have a new name...Oh wait it has already changed. They also have walleye fries. You have to try the walleye fries. Goes well with the Grain Belt beer they serve. To me, that is what “Minnesota Nice” is.

5. Michigan Stadium - Michigan

Big, old, and stoic. The template of what a Big Ten stadium should be. Or, what we all think it should be? Maybe, what the rest of the country thinks it should be. To be honest, it is kind of the only one that is like this in the Big Ten. Did I mention it holds a lot of people? I hear it is unpopular to stand and cheer in the stadium during the games.

4. Memorial Stadium - Lincoln - Nebraska

It is the #4 most iconic structure in the state behind #1 Chimney Rock, #2 Nebraska’s State Capitol, and #3 Willa Cather’s Childhood Home. It’s big and from my understanding no longer intimidating to opponents. Nebraska needs a new stadium. Something smaller and louder to drown out the gray hairs and rattle the opponents. Also, give the students better seats. Maybe I will write an article on a new stadium later on...

3. Beaver Stadium - Penn State

Old, rickety, and intimidating. Everything you want in a Big Ten establishment or a childhood erectors set. Also, they have a thing called a white out. I would have gone with blue but that is just me. I’m not a huge fan of wearing white. I always spill my food or drink on myself at some point so I would need to bring a second shirt to a game. Kind of inconvenient.

2. Ohio Stadium - Ohio State

They win Big Ten Championships here. Though, not many national championships. It looks kind of like Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Probably because Nebraska's stadium was modeled after it.
