The Lanett High School athletic facility suffered a major fire on Monday morning, forcing an evacuation of the school in Chambers County.
No one was hurt in the blaze, according to athletics director and football coach Cliff Story, but the field house for the perennial small-school state championship football team was severally damaged. The fire is believed to have started in the coaches’ office, according to Story.
“I lost some things that cannot be replaced,” Story said.
GOODMAN: Lanett, where football is essential even during a pandemic
In his time at Lanett, Story has helped the Panthers grow into one of the best small-school athletic departments in the state. The football team won state championships in 2017 and 2019 and the boys’ basketball team won state championships in 2016-2018. Memorabilia from those championships and other championships were in the coaches’ office.
The beloved field house, including the athletic department’s weight room, could be a total loss.
“It all just happened so I’m lost right now,” said Story, whose son, Kristian, is a cornerback for Alabama and a former Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year.
