KALAMAZOO, MI - The high school football season closed its fifth chapter of the 2020 season over the weekend, as Kalamazoo-area teams took the field for another exciting slate of gridiron action.
From quarterbacks slinging the ball around the field to running backs plowing through tackles and receivers waltzing into the end zone, there were plenty of primetime performances in the season’s penultimate week.
One player even scored touchdowns in three different ways and pulled down three interceptions.
But which player had the best Week 5?
Follow along as we look at some of the Kalamazoo-area’s top performers from Friday, based on box scores submitted by prep coaches from around the region.
At the end of the story, place your vote for which player you find deserving of the Kalamazoo Gazette Player of the Week.

Ashton Atwater, Otsego
The junior running back helped Otsego snap a three-game losing streak by collecting 215 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Bulldogs to a 35-7 win over Sturgis. Defensively, he added five tackles, including a stop for loss.
Jaden Blanchard, Kalamazoo Central
The senior running back continued to run around, over and through defenders, as he totaled 223 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in the Maroon Giants' 27-7 win over Mattawan.
Brayden Clark, Constantine
In the Falcons' 43-28 win over previously undefeated Kalamazoo United, the versatile sophomore carried 17 times for 100 yards, including a 47-yard scoring sprint that gave Constantine a 43-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Clark also caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Caden Hetmansperger as part of the Falcons' 22-point second quarter.
Brandon DeVries, Gobles
The junior running back helped Gobles avenge a Week 3 loss to rival Bloomingdale by carrying 28 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the 26-14 road win.
Connor DeVries, Lawton
The senior all-state safety made seven tackles and an interception as part of a secondary that held Schoolcraft quarterback Alex Thole without a touchdown pass for the first time in two years, and DeVries added three catches for 110 yards, including a 63-yard scoring grab, from his wide receiver position. But those impressive stats weren’t quite enough, as Lawton fell to the Eagles 45-14.
Jimmy Downs, Schoolcraft
Schoolcraft’s versatile wide receiver continued his impressive senior season by carrying six times for 75 yards and three touchdowns, while adding four catches for 105 yards and 10 tackles from his safety position to lead the Eagles to a 45-14 win over Lawton, which clinched at least a share of the SAC Valley title.
Tagg Gott, Schoolcraft
The sophomore running back had a breakout game with the SAC Valley title on the line by carrying 19 times for 137 yards and the first three touchdowns of Schoolcraft’s 45-14 win over previously undefeated Lawton. Gott also made eight tackles and recovered a fumble from his linebacker position.
Caden Hetmansperger, Constantine
The junior quarterback led Constantine to a big win over previously undefeated Kalamazoo United by carrying 10 times for 90 yards and three touchdowns while completing 2 of 4 passes for 67 yards, including a 64-yard scoring strike to Brayden Clark. Hetmasperger played a huge role in the Falcons jumping out to a 36-14 halftime lead by accounting for three touchdowns in the second quarter alone.
Ben Jackson, Richland Gull Lake
The junior running back enjoyed a breakout game by tallying 120 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries, but it wasn’t enough in the Blue Devils' 54-14 loss to St. Joseph.
Landon Motter, Lawton
The junior quarterback completed 9 of 18 passes for 221 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Chase Mitchell on fourth-and-2 and a 63-yard scoring strike to Connor DeVries, but the big plays weren’t enough to knock off Schoolcraft, as the Blue Devils suffered their first loss by a score of 45-14.
Ethan Scheib, Mattawan
The speed slot receiver was a bright spot in Mattawan’s 27-7 loss to Kalamazoo Central, as he caught four passes for 82 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead.
Andre Tarver, Kalamazoo Central
The speedy junior has emerged as a nice complement to senior Jaden Blanchard, and he was especially effective in K-Central’s 27-7 win over Mattawan by carrying just 12 times for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Sam Todd, Centreville
Centreville’s senior quarterback made sure the Bulldogs stayed undefeated by accumulating 181 yards of total offense and four touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 passing), while also returning a kickoff 78 yards for a score and leading the defense with six tackles and three interceptions in a 38-0 win over Hartford.
Anthony Tyus, Portage Northern
The senior running back and future Northwester Wildcat broke the 100-yard mark for the fifth time this season by rushing for 137 yards on 15 carries, but it wasn’t enough on Friday, as Holt bottled up just about all of Tyus' teammates and upset the previously undefeated Huskies, 26-0. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound athlete also led the defense with 12 tackles (2 for loss) from his strong safety spot.
Trevor Winkel, South Haven
The senior running back led South Haven to its third win of the season by carrying 19 times for 146 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown that gave the Rams a 14-0 lead with 5:11 left in the fourth quarter of their shutout victory over Comstock.
Will Zuiderveen, Kalamazoo United
The junior quarterback continued to impress in his first varsity season, completing 10 of 19 passes for 81 yard and a touchdown, while adding 111 yards and two scores on 18 carries, but it wasn’t quite enough, as the previously undefeated Titans fell to Constantine 43-28.
