KALAMAZOO, MI - The high school football season closed its fourth chapter of the 2020 season over the weekend, as Kalamazoo-area teams took the field for another exciting slate of gridiron action.
From quarterbacks slinging the ball around the field to running backs plowing through tackles and receivers waltzing into the end zone, there were plenty of primetime performances at the midway point of the season.
One player even tossed five touchdown passes in the first quarter.
But which player had the best Week 4?
Follow along as we look at some of the Kalamazoo-area’s top performers from Friday, based on box scores submitted by prep coaches from around the region.

The junior running back carried 32 times for 154 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing a team-high seven tackles on defense, but it wasn’t quite enough as rival Plainwell topped Otsego 37-15.
Dylan Carper, White Pigeon
Carper was instrumental in White Pigeon’s first win over Cassopolis since 1984, as the junior linebacker made three tackles and intercepted three passes, including one he returned for a touchdown, to lead the Chiefs to a 20-0 victory over the reigning Southwest 10 champs.
Connor DeVries, Lawton
The all-state free safety has been playing at a high level throughout his senior season, but DeVries took it up a notch in Friday’s 47-0 win over Galesburg-Augusta by tallying three tackles, an interception, four pass breakups and an 81-yard punt return touchdown. At wide receiver, he also caught three passes for 44 yards, including a 4-yard scoring strike shortly before halftime.

The rangy 6-foot-6 senior receiver only caught four passes in Friday’s 57-0 win at Saginaw, but three of them went for touchdowns, and DeVries finished with 63 yards.

Jett Gott, Schoolcraft
The speedy senior slot receiver caught five passes for 102 yards, including touchdowns grabs of 20 and 45 yards, in Schoolcraft’s 57-0 win over Saginaw. Defensively, he also made two tackles and an interception from his safety position.
Josh Hansen, Allegan
The junior quarterback kept Allegan in the game by throwing for 67 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another 128 on the ground, but it wasn’t quite enough in the Tigers' 44-24 loss to Niles Brandywine.

The senior running back led Paw Paw to its fourth win in four games this season by running for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the Red Wolves' 57-27 win over Vicksburg.
Gideon Likens, Plainwell
Coming off his team’s forfeit loss to Edwardsburg due to a COVID-19 exposure around the football program, Plainwell senior running back Gideon Likens tallied 187 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in the Trojans' 37-15 win over rival Otsego.
Daniel Matrau, Climax-Scotts
The sophomore quarterback carried 10 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, while adding seven tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery on defense in the Panthers' 14-12 loss to Bellevue.
Jesse Macherzak, Allegan
The junior running back piled up 137 yards and a touchdown in Friday’s 44-24 loss to Niles Brandywine.
Owen McDaniel, Plainwell
The senior running back was a big-play machine against rival Otsego, tallying 132 yards and a touchdown on just six carries in Plainwell’s 37-15 win over the Bulldogs. Defensively, he made a team-high 13 tackles, including two for loss, from his linebacker position.

The junior quarterback didn’t see action in the second half of Lawton’s 47-0 win over Galesburg-Augusta, but he made the most of his first-half opportunities by completing 6 of 12 passes for 131 yards, including touchdown tosses of 50 and 4 yards. He also found the end zone once on the ground and finished with 22 yards on just four carries.

Gobles defeated Webberville by the improbable score of 2-0 thanks to a safety from Joshua Lopez, but it was Schafer’s play along the defensive line that led the Tigers to victory, as the senior tallied 15 tackles, three stops for loss, two fumble recoveries and a sack in the shutout win.

The future GVSU Laker showed why he’s a returning all-state quarterback, as he completed 14 of 19 passes for 210 yards and six touchdowns in Friday’s 57-0 win over Saginaw. Five of Thole’s six scoring strikes came in the first quarter, which was just one shy of a state record, and his longest touchdown covered 45 yards to fellow senior Jett Gott.

A week after knocking off reigning Southwest 10 champ Cassopolis, Centreville picked up another big win, this time a 36-0 victory over perennial power Mendon thanks to stellar play from senior quarterback Sam Todd. The former running back showed he still has wheels by rushing for 97 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries, and got it done through the air, completing 4 of 7 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.

The “A-Train” had a signature game in Northern’s 28-0 win over rival Portage Central, carrying 17 times for 276 yards and four touchdowns, including an 80-yard rumble to the end zone, in which he shook off a handful of Mustang defenders before turning on the jets. He also led Northern with eight tackles from his strong safety position.
Trevor Winkel, South Haven
South Haven defeated Berrien Springs 28-18 to move to 2-2, which is the Rams highest win total since they went 4-5 in 2016. Winkel, a senior running back, was a big part of that success, as he carried 17 times for 143 yards and touchdown runs of 60, 4 and 2 yards
