The Pac-12 Conference will officially release its football schedule on Saturday morning, I’m told. Or at least that’s the last that conference athletic directors were last informed.
I spoke to six of them this week on the radio show -- three from the North Division and three from the South Division.
It was sort of like “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Except, we focused mostly on the football schedule, 9 a.m. kickoffs, the budget concerns and how each of them arrived on campus at their current job. It provided a fascinating glimpse at half of the conference’s athletic departments.
Here they are:
Rob Mullens, Oregon (Link to interview): Ducks AD said he is not raising his hand for 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. kickoffs this season. The Ducks' AD got specific with how a seven-game season affects his bottom line. Also, he talked about bumping into football coach Mario Cristobal while out for a morning jog. Good stuff.
Scott Barnes, Oregon State (Link to interview): Beavers AD says the $140 million Reser Stadium renovation project remains on schedule and fully funded. Donors, it seems, have not wavered amid the pandemic. Barnes was reluctant to share his budget challenges. I’m projecting a loss of somewhere in the $15 million to 20 million neighborhood based on the feedback I am getting from other ADs in conference. Barnes also told listeners that he’s been fly fishing for relaxation. Oregon State also not raising its hand for early kicks. Good stuff, too.
Mark Harlan, Utah (Link to interview): Utes AD said his program is going to allow friends and family inside the stadium this season. Local health guidelines aren’t as strict in his area. He’ll also allow visiting teams to bring friends and family. Harlan was candid and really good. Worth your time. Utah is one of the few conference programs that would very much like to play a 10 a.m. kickoff this season. Harlan likes the branding and exposure it would offer.
Rick George, Colorado (Link to interview): Colorado AD is a former MLB executive who has wide-ranging experience. He worked for the Champions Tour and PGA, previously. Also, George was a star defensive back in college at Illinois. He was really good. If you’re an aspiring college administrator, start with this interview. Also, he spoke candidly about Colorado facing a budget deficit of up to $20 million because of the limited schedule in football and no fans in the stadium. George also said he welcomes an early kickoff -- hand raised.
Martin Jarmond, UCLA (Listen to the interview): Bruins athletic director has been on the job for 94 days. It’s been a whirlwind. Jarmond was heartfelt in talking about the loss of his mother, Virginia. Really conversational interview. He spoke about Chip Kelly, the challenges at UCLA, and how he’d like to have had more input into the conference’s schedule this season.
Pat Chun, WSU (Listen to interview): Cougars athletic director is reading a book about leadership that was written by a famous poker player. He was terrific in this interview. Chun spoke about his first-year football coach, his own path to becoming an AD, and discussed the changing habits of sports fans who watch games on television. Chun told me he would watch a 9 a.m. kickoff on television, but doesn’t want his team playing in a game that kicks off in the morning.
