Friday night was the first round of an expanded Iowa high school football postseason.
Many top teams and most of Class 4A received byes to the second round, but there were still plenty of intriguing matchups on the schedule.

4A: Iowa City High 41, Ottumwa 16
To watch the Iowa City High Little Hawks celebrate Friday night, one might have thought they had won a Class 4A state title, not simply a first-round game.
After last week’s crushing defeat to end the regular season against Iowa City Liberty, City High came out and played with purpose, posting a 41-16 win Class 4A over Ottumwa on a cool, crisp night at Bates Field.
Now 2-3, the Little Hawks get another shot at rival Iowa City West next Friday night in a second-round game at West.
Ottumwa closes its season at 0-7.
“We took better care of the ball and that always helps,” said City High Coach Dan Sabers. “We were able to impose our will on them a litte bit once we figured out we shouldn’t be looking in the backfield so much and we got our defense in pretty good shape too.”

4A: Ames 35, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 31
Cedar Rapids Jefferson failed to score in the second half on Friday against Ames. The J-Hawks’ inability to get anything going offensively in the second half led to a 35-31 loss to Ames in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The first half was a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair with the teams scoring a combined 52 points. Ames quarterback Tamin Lipsey was electric. The highly-touted basketball recruit had rushing touchdowns of 88, 99 and 71 yards in the first quarter alone.
But Jefferson had responses to each Lipsey score — including its own big play in a fake end-around pass from Zac Henderson to Dkhai Pope that went for a 70-yard touchdown. Jefferson, in general, moved the ball more methodically than Ames, which relied on the big play from Lipsey throughout the night.
Jefferson had three players rush for at least 30 yards, led by Dylan Markham, who rushed for 121 yards.
Jefferson quarterback Carson Blietz didn’t have a particularly exceptional game, completing just 4 of his 14 pass attempts. But he did have an important play for Jefferson when he heaved a 41-yard bomb to Josiah Szabo in the end zone as time expired in the first half to give Jefferson a 31-21 lead.
In the second half, Lipsey played in all three phases — he was the quarterback, safety, punter and punt returner for Ames as it needed to mount a comeback. Which it successfully did.
Jefferson ended the season 0-8.

3A: Marion 18, Clear Creek Amana 14
You kind of wondered if the way the first half ended might have been the end for Marion’s football team. Turned out it was just the beginning.
The Indians scored 18 unanswered points the final two quarters and stunned Clear Creek Amana, 18-14, in a Class 3A first-rounder Friday night. It’s Marion’s first playoff win in eight years.
Lucas Unsen’s 2-yard touchdown run with just under seven minutes left capped off quite an improbable comeback, especially considering the discouraging way the first half ended for Marion (3-4). The Indians saw the clock run out on them with the ball at the CCA 4-yard line, the first time in the game they had done anything offensively.
Instead of being an emotional crippler, it was a springboard.
“Our kids have just not quit,” said an emotional Marion Coach Tim Lovell. “We were down last week in the second half to DeWitt, 17-8, took the lead in the fourth quarter. We should have won that game, credit DeWitt. But we just sent that message, that the game was not over. We’ve got 24 minutes to remember for the rest of your life. Quite honestly, they took it to heart. We came out with a little trickery, and that worked out really well."

3A: No. 9 West Delaware 56, Waterloo East 6
Jared Voss completed 9 of 11 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns as the Hawks whipped the Trojans for the second week in a row.
Voss connected twice with Kyle Kole for first-half TDs from 31 and 20 yards. He then added a 20-yard run for a score. Cole also ran for a TD, covering 14 yards.
Kyle Kelley scored two TDs for Class 3A ninth-ranked West Delaware (8-1), the first on a 34-yard interception return and the second on a 19-yard pass from Voss. Wyatt Voelker, who has a team-high 77 yards on eight rushes, scored on a 65-yard run and Logan Peyton on an 18-yard scamper.
Voelker also had two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

3A: Western Dubuque 47, Waverly-Shell Rock 21
Spencer Zinn ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns, including a backbreaking 96-yard sprint in the fourth quarter, as the defending Class 3A champion Bobcats (5-3) rolled at home.
Western Dubuque ran for 311 yards as a team and now will play West Delaware (8-1) in next week’s second round.

3A: Mount Pleasant 30, Benton Community 7
It was a rough night for the Bobcats offense in their Class 3A first round game at Mount Pleasant.
Mount Pleasant quarterback Jack Johnson had a pair of rushing touchdowns and one passing TD as the Panthers scored the first 30 points to end Benton Community’s season at 3-4.
Benton’s only score was a 3-yard touchdown run by Lawrence Wallace with 4:58 left.

2A: No. 10 Mount Vernon 25, Vinton-Shellsburg 15
Mount Vernon needed someone to make a big play. Who better than Collin Swantz, Class 2A’s leader in receiving touchdowns, yards and receptions?
With 6:02 remaining and the game tied at 15, facing a fourth-and-6 at Vinton-Shellsburg’s 30, Brady Ketchum threw a pass that was tipped by two Viking defenders and landed in the hands of Swantz, who then took it to the end zone, as the 10th-ranked Mustangs (7-1) held off Vinton-Shellsburg (2-6), 25-15, Friday night in a Class 2A first-round playoff game.
“It was a little breakdown play, but we know what we do when Brady starts scrambling,” Swantz said. “And that’s just what we did — find open space — and I was able to concentrate and make the play.”

2A: Anamosa 25, Center Point-Urbana 24
Two fateful bounces of the ball capped a wild night.
Anamosa weathered a frantic second half against Center Point-Urbana and won a Class 2A football first-round game, 25-24, Friday night.
Trailing 24-18, Anamosa (3-5) took over at its own 28 with 3:01 remaining. Faced with third-and-10, Raiders quarterback Grahm Humpal hit his favorite target, Trae Klatt for 24 yards to put Anamosa in Stormin’ Pointers’ territory.
Humpal took off on a 17-yard keeper, but was dropped for a 9-yard loss on the next snap.
Out of timeouts with the clock winding down, the Raiders lined up for third-and-19. Humpal fired deep for Klatt
The ball was tipped by Klatt, tipped by the defender, and settled into Klatt’s arms in the end zone for a 26-yard score.
“I just went all-out for it,” Klatt said. “I jumped and got it. It’s amazing. I dropped a couple of catches for our quarterback. I just finally made the catch for him.”
After failing on an earlier extra point (and two 2-point tries), Justin Tjaden’s kick split the uprights, giving the Raiders a 25-24 lead with 1:14 to go.

2A: Monticello 56, Union Community 18
Monticello scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to build a 49-18 lead en route to a 56-18 win over Union.
Freshman Preston Ries rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and also threw for a score to Tyler Luensman, who finished with three touchdowns for the Panthers (5-1).
Union’s Grant Behrens passed for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

2A: Independence 50, Roland-Story 8
Marcus Beatty rushed for three touchdowns and 186 yards and Mitchell Johnson was perfect in the pocket as the Mustangs (5-1) scored a lopsided Class 2A win at home.
Beatty scored on runs of 3, 7 and 1 yards and Mitchell completed all six of his passes for 97 yards and three TDs — two to Koby Beatty and one to Brady McDonald.

2A: West Liberty 35, Maquoketa 16
Jasiah Galvan rushed for 341 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns, including two game-high rushes of 96 and 70, as the Comets won a Class 2A first-round playoff game on the road.
Galvan was the recipient of great spacing from the offensive line, something Coach Jason Iske noted the team hasn’t always had this season.
“It was a product of a good line all night,” Iske said. “They’ve come along way this season, and we’ve probably started about nine guys up front. They’re really starting to improve at the right time.”

1A: Dyersville Beckman 28, Northeast 6
The Blazers only controlled the ball for just over 15 of the total 48 minutes, but capitalized on big plays and a “bend but don’t break” defense to win in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.
“Good and great teams are what we talk about,” Beckman Coach Mark Atwater said. “Tonight we were a good team; next week, it’s going to take a little bit more than that.”

1A: Cascade 55, Wilton 0
Justin Roling went 5-for-5 for 194 yards and four touchdowns passing and added another rushing score as Cougars (3-5) won a 1A first-round playoff game at home.
Cascade (6-2) advances to the second round next Friday and will host Denver (5-3) at James O’Meara Field.
Jack Menster added 92 yards rushing on 10 carries with two touchdowns for Cascade, upping his season totals to 1,483 yards and 20 scores.

A: Alburnett 40, Highland 19
From just one win all last season to one playoff victory this year.
The whirling turnaround of the Alburnett football program will continue for at least another week.
After posting a 1-8 mark a year ago, the Pirates earned their third postseason triumph in school history and first since 2011, beating Highland, 40-19, in a Class A first-round playoff football game Friday night at Jim Carver Field at Martin Sports Complex. Alburnett will play at Belle Plaine (6-2) in the second round.
“It is crazy,” Alburnett senior quarterback Hunter Caves said. “I can’t really put it into words. Just keep going, hopefully.”
The Pirates recorded their fourth consecutive win, improving to 5-2.

A: Lisbon 54, North Cedar 6
It’s only fitting that the entire Lisbon football team waited for their two teammates to finish speaking to the media after a 54-6 home win in the first round of the Class A playoffs Friday night.
The remaining Lions weren’t going to ring the victory bell without the backfield duo that accounted for six Lisbon touchdowns in the first half, and that same pair of punishing backs weren’t going to take credit without giving the props they felt were due.
“All credit to our line,” junior tailback Jamien Moore said. “They block everything and the holes just open up. It makes my job easy.”
Holes were everywhere for the home team as Kaden Caspers led the Lions (6-2) with 18 carries for 157 yards to go with 14 carries for 112 yards combined between Moore and senior Cole Clark, with each tallying three first-half touchdowns on the ground, to gain a 48-0 advantage at the half.
“I like playing fullback,” Clark said after finding the end zone three times on only six carries. “I get to block for all the guys that run, plus I can get the ball to the edge.”
Along with Caspers, Clark and Moore, the Lions had quarterback Baylor Speidel rush seven times for 25 yards, including a 6-yard score of his own that made it 48-0 with four minutes remaining in the game.
“It’s amazing how we can spread the ball around,” Moore said. “Teams don’t really know what we’re doing and it’s just really hard to cover.”
The Lions are still on the prowl in 2020.
“We’re hungry,” Moore said. “We haven’t had great seasons over the past few years and we’re looking to return to the Dome.”
The lone score for North Cedar (1-6) came with 1:59 left on the clock when Jaxon Sander found Kael Unruh for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

A: No. 7 South Winneshiek 42, Nashua-Plainfield 0
Logan Hageman and Cael Kuboushek scored two touchdowns apiece, giving the Class 1A seventh-ranked Warriors (7-1) the win in Calmar and Coach Jason Ohrt his 100th career victory.
South Winneshiek totaled 288 yards on the ground.

A: East Buchanan 30, Bellevue 6
Jacob Waller’s scoop-and-score touchdown in the third quarter put the Comets on the board, but the Bucs proved too much for host Bellevue in a Class A playoff game.

8P: Springville 36, Midland 28
A 16-point lead was gone. So was complete control of the game.
But the Springville Orioles didn’t act as if the sky was falling. They simply responded.
Spencer DeMean got loose for a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play after Midland had taken its first (and only) lead, and Springville escaped, 36-28, in an 8-Player first-round playoff football game Friday night at Allison Field.
“We stayed focused, executed the way we should, and that’s all there is to it,” DeMean said.
The Orioles (6-2) defeated Midland for the second time in eight days — it was 38-20 in last week’s regular-season finale — and advance to face No. 7 Easton Valley (7-1) in a second-rounder next week at Preston.
