College football's unpredictable offseason continued on Saturday after the Mid-American Conference became the first in the FBS ranks to cancel its 2020 season, citing student-athlete safety concerns. This eliminates an entire league from the postseason bowl picture, a slate of games already facing unprecedented times with eligibility requirements being altered this fall to fill slots.
That makes bowl projections a nearly impossible task at this junction, especially with Power 5 conferences moving to shortened slates and many programs facing revised — and considerably more difficult — schedules.
In an interview last week with 247Sports, Football Bowl Association Executive Director Nick Carparelli said he expects this year’s bowl season to be unlike any other for the 41 games the organization represents.
“Everything about the bowl experience will be up for discussion between the bowls and conferences,” Carparelli said. “That may include when it starts, how long it goes and when it finishes.”
Conferences playing 10-game schedules could potentially see teams who finish 3-7 get to the postseason.
“I feel that this year the final record is going to have to minimized and the agreements that are in place between bowl games and conferences should be prioritized above all else,” Carparelli said.
Lindy's Sports, whose robust preseason preview magazine is available on newsstands now, recently revealed its way-too-early bowl projections ahead of the season prior to this month's significant schedules changes. Here's a look at a few of Lindy's top-tier projected matchups:
