Ranking the top Top Five greatest college football players - 247Sports

College football has a long 150 year history that will continue at some point in 2020. While the upcoming season is uncertain in terms of scheduling and start times due to the coronavirus, the history of college football produced many elite players.

Sometimes these players go on to be even better in the NFL or are forever remembered for how great they were at the collegiate level. Some great players even make the College Football Hall of Fame but don’t have quite the same success at the pro level. However, that doesn’t take away from how they dazzled millions of fans on Saturday’s.

Tom Fornelli of the “Cover 3” podcast on CBS Sports rated his top five college football players of all time and his No. 5 pick starts down south.

Coming in at No. 5 is Ed Reed, a former Miami star who went on to have a NFL Hall of Fame career with the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. He played four years with the Miami Hurricanes from 1998-2001. In those seasons, Reed finished his collegiate career with 288 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 21 interceptions, 52 passes defended and four forced fumbles.

At No. 4 overall is quarterback Tim Tebow, who was arguably one of the biggest college football stars of all time when he was playing for the Florida Gators. While Tebow’s NFL career did not pan out and the former Heisman trophy winner attempted professional baseball (which is still ongoing), he was a touchdown machine with the Gators. A two-time national champion, Tebow came into his own during the 2007 season when he was named the full time starter. He finished that season with 3,286 yards, 32 touchdowns, six interceptions, 895 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

Tebow finished his college career with 9,286 yards, 88 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, 2,947 rushing yards and 57 rushing touchdowns before becoming a first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

At No. 3 is former USC running back Reggie Bush. Bush, who was recently welcomed back to the university with open arms, is regarded as one of the best human highlight reels ever. Bush finished with a solid NFL career, including a Super Bowl victory with the New Orleans Saints, but it was his days with the Trojans that turned him into a superstar.

Bush led USC to back to back national titles and won the Heisman trophy in 2005 before being drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2006. At USC, Bush finished his career (three seasons) with 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, 95 receptions, 1,301 receiving yards, 13 receiving touchdowns and four return touchdowns on punt and kick returns.

At No. 2 resides Vince Young, who stunned Bush’s USC Trojans in the 2006 BCS National Championship while with the Texas Longhorns. Young spent nine seasons in the NFL but ended up not replicating his success in college in a mixed bag career with the Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. At Texas, Young captured a national title and finished his three seasons with 6,040 passing yards, 44 touchdowns, 28 interceptions, 3,127 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns.

Finally, at No. 1 sits Tommie Frazier of Nebraska. The former quarterback is arguably the greatest player in Nebraska football history and had a fantastic four seasons before blood clots ultimately sidelined him and prevented him from establishing a professional football career. He led the Cornhuskers to three straight national championship games, winning two titles in 1994 and ‘95, while winning three consecutive national title game MVP awards.

Frazier was a dual-threat quarterback in a different era of football where the run game was much more prevalent compared to the modern game over the last 10-plus years. Frazier finished his college career with 3,521 yards, 43 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while rushing for 1,955 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Overall, the list features three quarterbacks, one running back and a safety.
