This Father's Day might be a little more special for the Hummel's.
It's not often a father gets to coach his son in high school football, then send that son off to a college football program.
Rob Hummel, the Spanish Springs football coach, will be sending his son, Trey Hummel, off to Sierra College later this summer to play receiver for the Wolverines.
He has some big footsteps to fill there.
Trey Hummel follows at least two other local receivers who went to Sierra recently, Devin Gray (Reed) now on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad and Brandon Aiyuk (McQueen) now with the San Francisco 49ers.
"The coolest thing is from the very beginning they've been really interested in Trey and saw his potential," Rob Hummel said. "He's kind of a late-bloomer, so to speak, he didn't really come on until his senior season, and had a great season."
Many colleges typically recruit high school players during their junior seasons.
Trey Hummel had several offers to walk on, including at Nevada, Boise State, Idaho State and Eastern Washington.
Trey Hummel has gotten taller and bigger since last season, when he caught 63 passes for 1,069 yards and 15 touchdowns, which led the Northern 4A. As a junior in the 2018 season, he caught 25 passes for 250 yards and one score
Trey Hummel is up to about 185 pounds, from 175 last year. Rob Hummel said he is about 205 and he thinks Trey has the frame to add about 20 pounds.
Rob Hummel said Sierra has a good reputation for getting players to bigger schools, and that they run an explosive, pass-oriented offense.
The Wolverines throw the ball about 65 percent of the times and the quarterback from last season, Qynton Pilcher, will return this year.
Junior Colleges in California are hoping to start summer training programs in late July and the season would begin in late August, depending on government phase-in programs.
In the meantime, Trey Hummel lifts and runs at home home in Sparks six days a week.
"He hasn't been laying around, that's for sure," Rob Hummel said.
His football teammates Jackson LaDuke will play at Oregon and Andrew Latham will play at Feather River College. Rocco Koch is still undecided on a school
