Two players on the Rutgers University football team have tested positive for the coronavirus, two people with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media on Sunday.
The two people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the situation.
The news was first reported on Rutgers Sports Insider, NJ Advance Media’s subscription-based text messaging service.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, who was unavailable for comment Sunday, is expected to address the media Monday for the first time since his players returned to campus for voluntary workouts on June 15.
After weeks of deliberations, Rutgers announced June 13 that its football players, coaches and support staff would be permitted to return to the Piscataway campus two days later for voluntary workouts. At least half of the other 13 Big Ten teams also had players back on their respective campuses for voluntary workouts at the time.
One of the Rutgers players who tested positive is on campus, while the other tested positive in a screening prior to returning to Rutgers, the people with knowledge of the situation said. Both players are in quarantine, the people said.
Rutgers officials put players through a risk assessment that included saliva tests and temperature checks upon their return last week, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media.

Schiano held a three-hour video conference call with players and their parents prior to announcing their return plan, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting.
In a statement after the June 15 date was announced, Schiano called welcoming the players back to campus “an immense responsibility, and one we take very seriously.‘' Schiano said the football program would “work closely'' with Dr. Joshua Bershad, the Rutgers athletics chief medical officer who developed the plan in collaboration with healthcare experts and the Big Ten Conference Taskforce for Emerging Infections Disease, the school said last week.
State officials on Saturday announced 25 new deaths attributed to the coronavirus and 446 new positive tests around New Jersey as the Garden State continues to relax restrictions on the public after months of lockdown measures. New Jersey has now reported 12,857 known fatalities, with 168,834 known cases, in the more than three months since the outbreak began March 4.
New Jersey, a densely populated state of 9 million residents, ranks second among U.S. states in total deaths, after New York. California on Friday surpassed New Jersey for the second-most cases in the country.
