Crusaders second-half comeback falls short in FCS-playoff loss to Wildcats

VILLANOVA, Pa. –No. 24 Holy Cross (10-3, 6-0 PL) fell to fifth-seeded Villanova (10-2, 7-1 CAA), 21-16, in the Second Round of the NCAA Division I FCS Championship at Villanova Stadium on Friday night.
 
The Crusaders’ season concludes after Patriot League Coach of the Year Bob Chesney led his squad to their third-straight League title and the first FCS-playoff win in program history.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – No. 24 Holy Cross scored 16 second-half points but could not overcome a two-touchdown halftime deficit in a 21-16 loss to fifth-seeded Villanova in the second round of the FCS Playoffs at Villanova Stadium.
*Sophomore quarterback Matthew Sluka rushed for 106 yards and one touchdown and completed 20-of-35 passes for 169 yards and an interception. Sophomore wide receiver Jalen Coker led Holy Cross with six catches for 70 yards, while senior wide receiver Ayir Asante had six receptions for 50 yards.
*Junior linebacker Jacob Dobbs, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, recorded a team-high seven tackles, and senior defensive back Walter Reynolds finished with six tackles for a defense that held Villanova to 281 yards of total offense, more than 100 yards under their season average.  
*Villanova took a 14-0 halftime lead on a pair of rushing touchdowns from graduate student running back Justin Covington.
*Holy Cross opened the third quarter with a 12-play drive that freshman running Jordan Fuller capped with a seven-yard jump pass to junior tight end Sean Morris, making the score 14-7.
*On the ensuing kickoff, freshman linebacker Frankie Monte forced a fumble that sophomore defensive back Terrell Spence recovered.
*Senior placekicker Derek Ng connected on a 22-yard field goal four plays later to bring the Crusaders within four points, at 14-10.
*The Wildcats answered on the next drive on a 14-yard rushing touchdown by senior running back Jalen Jackson.
*Sluka led a 14-play drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter before he rushed for a three-yard touchdown with 6:22 remaining in the game. The two-point pass was intercepted, leaving the score 21-16.
*Holy Cross’s defense forced a punt to put the ball back in the hands of the offense with 3:43 left in regulation, but the Wildcats’ defense stopped the Crusaders on a fourth-down play and ran the clock.

PATRIOT LEAGUE IN THE FCS PLAYOFFS
Patriot League teams are 8-14 in FCS Playoff games since 2010, winning at least one postseason game in seven seasons during that span. Colgate advanced to the quarterfinal round in 2018 by defeating James Madison (23-20). The Raiders fell to eventual National Champion North Dakota State (35-0). Since 2010, Colgate has won three playoff games, with Fordham and Lehigh winning two apiece since 2010. Holy Cross’s first-round win over Sacred Heart was the League’s first postseason win since 2018.
