The Canadian Football League will begin training camp this week with the season kicking off on August 5. There are always a few notable former Buckeyes that continue their gridiron careers up north like Duron Carter, Jonathan Newsome, and Troy Smith from years past. And true to form, there are five memorable OSU names to keep track of for the 2021 season as well.

For those unfamiliar with the CFL, there are nine teams and the field is larger with only three downs. But another key component is that teams are required to maintain a certain number of native Canadians on the roster and on the field, which makes roster sports even more complex.

Below are the five former Buckeyes who are looking to make waves this season in the CFL. Please remember there was not a season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jalin Marshall was with Ohio State from 2013-2015 and played extensively after receiving a redshirt in 2013. He was with the New York Jets from 2016 until his release before the 2018 season. Marshall spent that season with the Dayton Hornets in a semi-pro league. He then landed with the Orlando Apollos of the AAF in 2019 and scored the league’s first touchdown. He played well enough to earn a cup of coffee with the Las Vegas Raiders and was signed by Hamilton in 2019. That year he played in eight games for the Tiger-Cats and started three.

Najee Murray was with Ohio State in 2012 and saw action in six games as a freshman, but transferred to Kent State, where he was named All-MAC multiple times. He was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and was released later that year. Murray has been with Montreal since 2018 and has started three games since.

It should not be shocking at all that one of the best receivers in Ohio State history has had such an impressive career north of the border. After dealing with some injuries in the NFL, Posey was signed by the Toronto Argonauts in 2016 and was a major part of their Grey Cup championship in 2017. He even won Grey Cup MVP. He parlayed that success into another NFL shot with the Baltimore Ravens and found his way back to the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes before joining Marshall in Hamilton.

Tyvis Powell was with the Buckeyes from 2012 until he declared for the 2016 NFL draft forgoing his final season. He went undrafted and spent time with multiple NFL teams, but is hoping after signing with the BC Lions last month that he’ll make an impact in the CFL.

Damon Webb, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Damon Webb had a solid career at Ohio State and went undrafted in 2018. He spent a short time with the Tennessee Titans and will now get a shot to show what he can do with Saskatchewan.
