The Kentucky football team is resuming workouts Monday; basketball others, return pending - Courier Journal

LEXINGTON — Members of the Kentucky football team are returning to workouts Monday.

The Southeastern Conference had halted all in-person athletic activity in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic but recently cleared schools to begin bringing athletes back to campus. UK announced over the weekend the first phase of its reintroduction of athletes to campus would begin Monday with members of the football team who remained in Lexington during the shutdown.

Those athletes will be allowed to participate in voluntary workouts with the strength and conditioning staff. All other staff, including coaches, will continue to work remotely.

According to a UK news release, the following protocols are in place for athletes returning to campus:

  • An initial screening process for each student-athlete prior to beginning voluntary activities that includes antibody testing
  • Daily student-athlete and staff screening prior to entering a facility, including temperature checks and completion of a COVID-19 symptom questionnaire
  • Acknowledgement of vulnerable populations for both student-athletes and staff and following recommended accommodations and restrictions
  • Proactive education on COVID-19 best practices
  • Establishment of single entry and exit procedures and securing other doors to minimize facility use
  • Providing personal protective equipment for student-athletes and staff and setting rules for when masks must be worn

Returning football players who are moving back to Lexington can begin their screening process Monday with the goal of returning to workouts on June 15. Newcomers to the program will begin the screening process on June 15 with the goal of starting workouts on June 22.

UK has yet to announce plans for the return of athletes in sports other than football, but Keion Brooks Sr., the father of UK basketball sophomore Keion Brooks, recently told The Athletic the UK men's basketball team is tentatively scheduled to return to campus during the week of June 22.

Basketball coach John Calipari outlined some general plans for the return of his team in a recent episode of his "Coffee with Cal" web show.

"The protocol would be the medical stuff for three days before we do anything, conditioning without us coaches for two weeks," Calipari said. "...We would be in a bubble. Practice facility, our lodge where just our kids live, each in their own room. We’d be in a pretty good bubble. We have a great hospital there if anything were to happen. Probably better for them than having to go to an emergency room.

"... I just assume have them together. Conditioning, weight training, just be together a little bit. They’d have to be in groups, social distancing. The protocol with how we would do it for the time being. None of us know a month from now how it may change for the better. We just don’t know."

Opinion: With COVID-19 cases already appearing on football teams, how alarmed should we be?
