The coronavirus crisis has cost college football at least one game in 2020.
Jackson State and Tennessee State will not square off in Memphis on Sept. 12 in the Southern Heritage Classic, the founder of the game announced in a press release Wednesday. The founder, Fred Jones, cited guidance from the Shelby County Health Department in canceling all activities related to the game.
And with that, the matchup between the historically black universities became what is believed to be the first DIvision I college football game called off due to concerns regarding the novel coronavirus.
“I know this is a great disappointment to many who consider SHC one of the major highlights of the year,” Jones said through the press release. “The health and safety of our attendees along with that of our staff, sponsors, and others is a top priority. I encourage everyone to keep practicing recommended safety and social distancing measures so that we can return to our usual activities as soon as possible.”
Jackson State has faced Tennessee State 30 times in the annual Southern Heritage Classic. The matchup was also cancelled in 2018 because of inclement weather.
No Power 5 conference team has indicated it will adjust its regular-season schedule in the face of the pandemic, and many student athletes have returned to campuses around the country. But uncertainty continues to hover over the prospects of a 2020 season as most major sports leagues in the United States remain on hold.
The question is whether the cancellation of the Southern Heritage Classic will represent the first of many or an early and mostly isolated precaution.
