The numbers are in: Michigan’s win over Penn State on Saturday was the most-watched college football game of the weekend.
ESPN says the noon ET kickoff from State College, Pa., drew 5.942 million viewers on ABC, the highest number across any of the major networks. It was also ABC’s most-watched afternoon game of the season.
Audience for the 21-17 game peaked late at 8.7 million viewers.
ESPN says the college football week was its most popular of the season, registering 5.3 billion minutes of live games viewed on Saturday, “making it the most-watched day of college football across ESPN networks.”
Disney owns ABC and the ESPN family of networks, including ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and ESPN+.
The viewership numbers come just two weeks after Michigan played Michigan State in what turned out to be the most-watched college football game of the season, averaging more than 9.2 million viewers on FOX.

Say what you want about Jim Harbaugh and the eighth-ranked Wolverines (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten), but they continue to be a huge draw for the TV networks.
Michigan plays Maryland on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET kickoff), a game set for the regional Big Ten Network.
BROYLES AWARD: Michigan offensive coordinator and receivers coach Josh Gattis was one of 58 nominees for this year’s Broyles Award, handed out to the nation’s top assistant coach. Gattis was the only Wolverines assistant to crack the list and one of nine Big Ten assistants considered.
Gattis, 37, is in his third season at Michigan, which boasts a top-30 offense and rushing attack that ranks 13th nationally.
Ex-defensive coordinator Don Brown was a Broyles Award nominee in 2018, and finalist in 2016, but never won it.

SENIOR BOWL: Invites to the Senior Bowl have been sent out, and confirmations are starting to roll in. Nothing yet for Michigan, but expect at least a couple of players to accept. It’s tricky this year given the extra year of eligibility afforded to players because of the COVID-19 pandemic season of 2020. Some of the guys who under normal circumstances would have left after this year might stay.
But others, like Aidan Hutchinson, Josh Ross, Brad Hawkins and Donovan Jeter are sure bets to make the jump. We’ll update if and when players start accepting invites.
Speaking of the Senior Bowl and Hutchinson, the game’s scouts named him national defensive player of the week for his seven-tackle, three-sack game against Penn State. Michigan’s star defensive end continues to rack up national accolades and attention, setting up for what should be a first-round grade in the 2021 NFL Draft.
