Football news live: Dean Smith to Norwich latest, Rangers manager updates, plus San Marino vs England build-up - The Athletic

Well, with Cristiano Ronaldo consigned to March's play-offs, it's worth looking at how they actually work.

Via The Athletic's Charlotte Harpur: "All 10 group runners-up will advance to the play-offs, which will be during the March international break next year. The top six of those teams, ranked based on their results in the group stage, will be seeded in the semi-final draw and the bottom four will be unseeded.

"These 10 will be joined by the two highest-ranked 2020-21 Nations League group winners who subsequently failed to finish in the top two of their World Cup qualifying group. They will also be unseeded.

"The 12 teams will be split into three play-off ‘paths’ and will enter a single-leg semi-final, with the six winners advancing to a single-leg final. Whichever three teams win those three finals will go to the World Cup."
