Donovan Edwards lived up to his billing Saturday for West Bloomfield’s football team.
The University of Michigan recruit rushed 14 times for 257 yards – that’s an average of 18.4 yards per carry – in leading the Lakers to their first state football championship with a 41-0 victory over defending Division 1 champion Davison at Ford Field.
Edwards scored three touchdowns on runs of 78, 71 and 16 yards.
And that was against a defense that was considered one of the best in the state, a unit that had allowed 76 total points before facing West Bloomfield.
That said, Davison was without it’s top defensive player, end Harry Unger, after he injured his hamstring in the first quarter.
Jake Ward kicked field goals of 39 and 45 yards.
The loss was Davison’s worst since a 42-0 setback to Flint Carman-Ainsworth in the 2013 regular-season finale.
Both teams finished 11-1.

HALFTIME
West Bloomfield coach Ron Bellamy on FSD: “We’re playing good defense. We had to get settled in a little bit. They’re a great football team. They’re physical. We had to match their physicality. We’ve never played these guys before and I think our defense did a great job holding them to no points.
“For us offensively, we felt like we could run the football against them and we’re doing a heckuva job. We had the early turnover but if we limit the turnovers we’ll give ourselves a good chance to win this ballgame.
“We had six uncharacteristic penalties in the first half.”
SECOND QUARTER
End of 2: West Bloomfield leads Davison 17-0.
0:36: Davison turns the ball over on downs at the West Bloomfield 33.
0:55: Payton Pizzala’s 29-yard TD run for Davison called back because of an illegal formation.
1:23: Another shanked punt but this time by West Bloomfield. It goes out of bounds at the Lakers’ 35.
2:52: West Bloomfield’s defense has been the difference so far. The Lakers forced another punt and Gabe Hopkins booms one 50 yards to the West Bloomfield 17.
5:39: Davison fumbles and West Bloomfield recovers but after a review Davison keeps possession because of a West Bloomfield defender was out of bounds when he touched the ball. Huge break for Davison.
6:30: Mehki Elam scores on a 13-yard run and Jake Ward kicks the PAT. Davison hasn’t trailed by this many points since losing 22-0 to Warren DeLaSalle in Week 7 of the 2019 season. West Bloomfield 17, Davison 0.
7:14: After two shanked punts, Gabe Hopkins of Davison boots one 39 yards. That should help his confidence.
8:12: Jake Ward with a 39-yard field goal for West Bloomfield. West Bloomfield 10, Davison 0.
10:16: After another short Davison punt, West Bloomfield takes over on its own 17.

7:09: Davison fumbles this time and West Bloomfield’s Kyle Johnson recovers on his team’s 27.
8:01: Davison’s Harry Unger, the Cardinals best defender, has to be caried off the field after landing hard following a leaping catch. Not a good sign for Davison.
9:49: Dillion Tatum fumbles for West Bloomfield, Riley Henderson recovers for Davison at its 38. Kobe Sellers forced the fumble.

Davison is trying to win its second straight Division 1 state football championship today while West Bloomfield is seeking its first in school history.
The teams will meet for the D1 crown beginning at 1 p.m. at Ford Field.
Davison (11-0) is riding a 16-game winning streak and finished the regular season ranked No. 2 by The Associated Press. West Bloomfield (10-1) was ranked No. 5.
The game will feature perhaps the best running back in the state, Michigan recruit Donovan Edwards of West Bloomfield. He has helped the Lakers average almost 50 points in five playoff games.
Davison also had a prolific offense but its defense has been even better, allowing 76 points all season.
West Bloomfield is making its second appearance in a championship game. The Lakers lost 3-2 to Clarkston in the 2017 Division 1 championship game. This is also Davison’s second appearance in the finals.
