The newest Bachelor Matt James is making headlines because he’s the first black male lead on ABC’s hit reality show.
Some may also hype the 28-year-old James as a “former football star,” but was he really?
ANOTHER FOOTBALL BACHELOR: A look at The Bachelor's Colton Underwood's NFL career
When Colton Underwood was the Bachelor in 2018, he was billed as a “former NFL player,” which is true if you count time on practice squads. Underwood was never actually on an NFL roster during the regular season.
James played receiver at Wake Forest University, where his friend and recent Bachelor runner-up Tyler Cameron was a backup quarterback.
The 6-foot-5 James had 48 catches for 458 yards in his college career, but never scored a touchdown. His time at Wake Forest was marred by injuries, but he was healthy for most of his senior season and finished with 40 catches in 2014.
That was enough for James to receive an invitation to the Carolina Panthers’ rookie minicamp in 2015, but he didn’t catch on with the team and was released before the preseason started.
James, whose season of "The Bachelor" will air in 2021, should be hyped for his humanitarian work - detailed in this story - which seems to make him a perfect match for someone.
