A few days before Grayson McCall quarterbacked Coastal Carolina to a 35-28 win last week against Troy, his father, Jody McCall, opened Instagram and saw he had a new message.
“Would it be possible to meet you and your son?” 14-year-old Jackson Schaffer asked. “I’m a big fan. I have a fan club going with him and everything.”
A handful of Grayson McCall fan pages exist on the social media app, including Schaffer’s. Schaffer, from Cherry Hill, N.J., began following Coastal Carolina’s electric redshirt sophomore quarterback last season, when McCall dived into the end zone for a rushing touchdown at Kansas. He loved the way McCall played and lit up last week when his father, Jason, handed him an early Christmas card with tickets inside for the Troy game at Coastal Carolina’s Brooks Stadium.
McCall (6-foot-3, 210 pounds), who sports one of many mullets at Coastal Carolina and has a cool confidence, leads the country in passing efficiency (216.07) and yards per attempt (13.1). McCall is on pace to shatter the FBS single-season passing efficiency record that Alabama’s Mac Jones set last season (203.06).
