The 2020 Big Ten football season was an absolute roller coaster. First, the league announced it would postpone its season until the spring. When it saw that several other leagues were still planning to play, it opted for an eight-game, conference-only schedule.
The Big Ten experienced COVID issues all over the place, just like other conferences. The end result left the league to decide to change its six-game minimum rule to compete in the conference title game to allow Ohio State to compete in it, a game in which the Buckeyes won to improve to 6-1, which gave them a berth in the College Football Playoff.
In the playoff’s seven-year history, Ohio State is the conference’s only team that’s represented the Big Ten more than once (four times) and only one of two teams to ever make it (Michigan State, 2015). It’s no surprise that the Buckeyes are once again considered the team to beat in the Big Ten heading into 2021.
There’s many other storylines around the conference, such has embattled head coaches heading into critical seasons. Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh was able to ink an extension after months of speculation about his job, while the pressure to succeed is ramping up on Nebraska’s Scott Frost and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm.
With the NFL Draft deadline for underclassmen to enter passing, how does the Big Ten look heading into 2021? Athlon Sports ranked each team, 1-7 in each division. Here are the rankings below, with the East division followed by the West:
