Scott Satterfield and staff have made it known that they will be bringing in a small recruiting class for the 2022 cycle. However, they have been very aggressive when it comes to offering 2023 kids and those efforts appear to have paid off as they are in for a major recruiting weekend. The staff will have a large number of 4-star prospects from the 2023 class on campus for the Clemson game as well as a handful of high priority 2022 recruits.
With the news for Selah Brown’s commitment on Thursday, Lousiville will have four of their current commitments on the sideline for the game. Chance Morrow, Popeye Williams, and Maurice Turner will make return visits for a game and the group will likely work as recruiters for the staff.
Pete Nochta and his recruiting staff have done a great job of fostering relationships with a substantial number of California recruits but the staff has plenty of other players expected to visit this weekend.
2022 CLASS
CHRIS BELL - WIDE RECEIVER
Louisville has their sights on another outside receiver for this class and Chris Bell is one of a few guys that they have targeted. Bell had been committed to Southern Miss, but he opened up his recruitment after receiving offers from Louisville, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. The Mississippi schools will be hard to beat out but Bell has been getting a lot of attention from Gunther Brewer.
JAMES PEARCE - EDGE
UofL got in early on Pearce who is a very under-the-radar player who has seen his recruitment explode. Back in March, UofL, Oklahoma, and Syracuse were the only power five teams to offer Pearce. Fast forward to this fall and Missouri, FSU, Michigan State, Arizona State, Tennesse, Georgia, and Florida have all offered.
Pearce is the exact type of player that the defensive staff has coveted at 6-5/220. He would be a fit for the “Dog” position or defensive end.
TAWFIQ THOMAS - NOSE TACKLE
Fans have clamored for Louisville to bring in a big nose tackle and Lousiville will have just that on campus in Tawfiq Thomas. The Tampa native is 6-4/340 and he can run pretty well for his size. Thomas has worked hard to slim down and it has paid off. Michigan, Iowa State, and Arkansas seem to be the biggest competition for the Cards.
2023 CLASS
PIERCE CLARKSON - QUARTERBACK
The biggest recruit on campus this weekend will be Pierce Clarkson. The son of a renowned quarterback coach, Clarkson has fantastic mechanics while also possessing the ability to use his legs on designed runs or scrambles. Clarkson is only 6/200 but he has a good frame and his arm strength is great. Lousiville has put a lot of effort into this recruitment and getting him on campus twice in a handful of months is a good sign.
JEREMIAH COLLINS - CORNERBACK
Louisville has made an effort to recruit local players and they look to be in good shape with Collins who is a cornerback from Louisville Male. Collins earned a scholarship during a camp at Lousiville in June and he has been a player the staff has focused on. UofL will have some competition with Kentucky, Illinois, Purdue, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech offering this summer as well.
JSHAWN FRAUSTO-RAMOS - CORNERBACK
UofL developed a relationship with some recruiting and brand influencers from California this summer and it has led to them getting some of the top players in the state to come to visit. Frausto-Ramos is one of the stars for St John Bosco High and he will be joining Clarkson for a visit. Frausto-Ramos is a long corner with outstanding cover skills. He will grow into his frame and become a very good boundary corner, in my opinion.
RJ JONES - SAFETY
You won’t find too many players who fit the athletic profile as Jones does. He is 6-1/185 with good speed and he is a great tackler. Jones takes great angles to the ball and shows above-average coverage skills. He is another prospect from St John Bosco Prep that UofL got in on a bit earlier than some of the elite schools. It’s nearly impossible to know where they stand, but UofL needs help at safety now and the will in the 2023 class as well.
LEVITICUS SU’A - LINEBACKER
UofL has a handful of California players set to visit that aren’t from St John Bosco High and Su’a is one of them. Su’a is an inside linebacker prospect and he is an impressive “box” player. He isn’t a burner but he reads plays well and chases down anything inside the hashes.
KENDRICK GILBERT - DEFENSIVE LINE
Gilbert plays defensive end for his high school team but he projects as a nose tackle as he is 6-5/260. Gilbert has a great motor as an end and I think that will translate well for him when he plays inside at the college level. Gilbert has early interests from Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, and others.
KAYDEN MCDONALD - NOSE TACKLE
Louisville has a handful of nose tackles on campus this weekend and McDonald is likely the best. The Georgia prospect is 6-3/325 and he can move. What stands out is his strength. He just throws blockers out of the way. Georgia is the likely destination for McDonald but getting him in for a visit is good to see.
DATRELL JONES - RUNNING BACK
Jones is the jewel of Boston College’s recruiting class but UofL could have a shot at stealing him away with their run-focused offense. BC has been more reliant on their passing game and maybe Jones finds the UofL offense more favorable. Either way, Lousiville getting him on campus as a division rival, is a positive.
DAYLAN SMOTHERS - RUNNING BACK
Daylan Smothers has been offered by just about every high-level school you can think of. The 5-11/182-pound tracks guy has offers from the SEC to the Big Ten. UofL will need at least one running back in the class and Smothers would be a great fit.
MICHAEL DAUGHERTY - SAFETY
Daugherty is one of the most interesting players expected on campus this weekend. The top-15 safety in the 2023 class has a connection to the city of Louisville as his father is from here. Daugherty was a late addition to the expected visitors but the UofL staff has to be hopeful that the atmosphere, as well as the play on the field, is enough to pique the interest of one of the best players in the 2023 class.
JAHLIL MCCLAIN - WIDE RECEIVER
McClain is yet another top-25 player from the state of California expected to visit this weekend. The wide receiver from St John Bosco High is a slot option that UofL will likely need in the 2023 class. McClain has great speed and quickness and it’s very hard not to think of Ahmari Huggins-Bruce when you watch him.
